quad stop/ tail light conversion

Post by Ian Geary »

After a few weeks of umming and erring, I finally got round to doing this today, and am well chuffed with the outcome.

I have to say, it was a lot easier than I expected. One fly in my ointment was that the stop/tail bulb holders from a Toyota Lucida didn't fit the MR2 light cluster - I had to "adjust" them with a hacksaw.

Rather than go down the diode/ relay/ switch route, I just bolted an auxilary fog light under the number plate, and powered it from the existing fog feeds going into the inner lights to keep legal.

It would have taken much more time if I'd had to fit a fog switch and run wires the length of the car though.

Total cost: £14.98 (2 x bulb holders from scrappie £5, fog light £6.99, 2 x bulbs £1.99), time 2.5 hours.

Thinking about it now, I should have bought an LED high level brake light and fitted it under the number plate instead.

It would look much better, and I doubt it would have failed an MOT as fog & brake lights tend to be the same brightness.

I would recommend this mod to anyone who gets a screwdriver kit for christmas and is feeling bored.

I suppose pics of the work itself would be more useful, as I guess most people know what rear lights look like. I'll have a go getting some tomorrow (weather permitting)

Hey Ian,

Love the 4 light setup, makes a great improvement IMO.

But I'm not quite sure what you mean about your auxilary fog light being easier to fit than just wiring the inners as fogs?? You wouldn't need a switch, just a doide or two and with your dual filament bulbs its done. You said your fog feed was already in place anyway?

Have I missed something?

Hi Leeroy, thanks for your comments. :thumleft:

just noticed your reply - only a couple of months late!

Yes - there was already a rear fog light feed on my car - so a cable running from a dash switch to the rear of the car. I don't know if this comes from a relay - I hope so.

At that time, it was easier for me to bolt a stand alone fog light on from a place round the corner, wire the feed from the dash to "+" and connect "-" to a nearby earth.

Back then, I wouldn't know where to get a diode from, and didn't even own a soldering iron.

In hindsight, now I've done a bit of soldering and electrics and work down the road from a Maplins, it would be easier to route this fog light wire from the dash into the inner 2 light 21w filaments, putting diodes en-route to stop the rest of the brake lights coming on.
