It needs to meet the DVLA regulations to be legal.

I had a 12x3 before and got a £30 fine for it.

I now have a 13x3.5 which is perfectly legal according to the DVLA regs.

For the last 3 years ive had this plate on the front of mine - and only been questioned once by the police.

Just follow these guidelines from the DVLA website when having your plate made up.

http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/regmark ... ements.htm

Display of Vehicle Registration Marks on Imported Vehicles
(which have a restricted space for a standard sized number plate)

Certain imported vehicles may be permitted to display number plates with smaller characters if:

* The vehicle's construction/design cannot accomodate standard size number plates

Specifications for smaller sized plates (for certain imported vehicles)

Character Height 64mm

Character Width 44mm

Character Stroke 10mm

Space between characters 10mm

I've decided to get a smaller plate made up.

FWIW, I'm gonna print out that page from the DVLA guidelines and keep it in the car.
Might at least save the hassle of having to do a "produce" once in a while.
