Temp Gauge Wont Go Above 1/4

Post by Wobbs »

Hi Guys
I think my thermostatnot working correctley or it's stuck in Jap mode. Temp gauge wont go above 1/4, if i leave car running gauge gose up to half and fans come on. If I drive car when gauge reads 1/2 it drops down to 1/4. Will a n/a thermostat fit my tubby? as these are readley available from Toyota.

Sounds like the themostat - I wouldn't mess about though, get a proper one from Mr T.

One tip, don't buy a blueprint part - I've heard of them failing within a few months of being fitted - get a genuine Toyota part.

Mine sits at about 1/4, sometimes rises a bit. Had no problems.

Mine always used to sit at 1/2 - but my new MR2 I think has the same problem - dodgy thermostat because it sits at 1/4 or just under.

Doesn't TRD do a stat for the MR2 - I bought one last year and it was great.

Cheers Guy's
Could it be that the Japaneese spec thermostat would open a little sooner due to the climate there?

um yes but that is still way too low. Either the gauge or the thermostat is gubbed since it should still half way all the time no matter what. That is why the car has a thermostat to control these things :)

Hi, just had this problem with my tubby. try disconnecting the temperature sender unit wire and earthing it. this should make the temp guage go to the top. if it does it is the sender unit that is faulty (£17.70 from MrT)

I had to get a new sender for my N/A - it was doing the same as you describe. Got my part from a motor factors for 4.59 - its an 'intermotor' part, but looks exactly the same as the original, and works perfectly. Dont give MrT the satisfaction of sniggering behind your back as you hand over your hard-earned

Having issues with my car too, although i'm 99% sure the thermostat is stuck i'm also wondering if the sender is away - where is it located?

Thanks :D

On my car, its on the distributor side of the engine, on the housing bolted to the cylinder head. If you follow the coolant filler cap tube down, you should see it - there is only one wire going to it. If your unsure, make sure the car is warm, and disconnect it - if your temp gauge doesnt do anything - you know you've found it. I just unscrewed mine quickly, and screwed the new one in quickly, only lost a little coolant, then top it up. Jobsa....

Thought there was 2 wires?

one for the temp guage and one for the ECU temp feed (for cold engine boost cut)

I think they must have a sender each, because the sender for gauge definately only has 1 wire.
