Discussion and technical advice the SW20 MR2. 3S-GTE, 3S-GE, 3S-FE etc
Anything and everything to do with maintenance, modifications and electrical is in here for the Mk2.
Got a trip up to Durham next week and as I have a few points I cant afford any more. Whats the best route from London the A1 or the M1? I think the M1 will have less cameras and over zealous plods.Any views or spots to note?
My vote is M1. It's just so much easier than the A1M when those two lanes (almost always) clog up. Where are you going in Durham? It may be easier for you to leave the A1M and travel the remainder on the A19.
Definately go the M1. Much quicker is a faster road, no speed cameras, not many police. Also you don't have the issue of trucks overtaking each other slowing you down which you would get on the A1.
Ps; shouldn't this be in off topic?
thanks lauren i was leaning towards the M1. can i ask why its off topic? this forum is titled general.i was asking a general question so whats the problem?

You must have read my mind.
Mk2 NA Rev1 -*- Mk2 Turbo Rev2 -*- Mk1 NA -*- Mk2 Turbo Rev 3 = all gone!

Its a general section for all things MR2. i'd say asking directions isn't really about MR2s.
Its not the same as the general section on the OC.
I do this journey twice a week, its the m1 everytime, there's no speed camera's and its a lot easier as there's no round-abouts to slow down for.
should be looking at a journey time of 3 1/2 - 4hrs.
I recommend M1 > M18 > A1
This way you miss out one of the busier sections around Leeds. The M18 is generally quiet and the A1 noth from there is usually pretty good too.
I have to travel to Newcastle on a regular basis, and found this route to be the most consistent for lack of traffic and police.
looks like the M1 then.thanks to you all for the help .I will be driving my "MK1 MR2" up to the frozen north on Wednesday. So if you see a beautiful silver MK1 and a dented Blue t top Mk1 then give us a wave.
I am trying to put Mr2 in as much as poss.so the MR2 police dont move non MR2 posts. You cant have an MR2 owner asking about directions for MR2s incase he leaves his MR2 at home and drives another non MR2 car 350 mls just because he enjoys driving non MR2s so much.

Thats not quite it Kev! If everyone asked directions on the General section then it wouldn't really be worth viewing would it?

Kev, I'm afraid Lauren's right. The General section here is really about general MR2 questions that don't fit better into one of the existing forums.
To get the best response to each post, we're trying to make sure people know what kind of content to expect in each forum. At the moment, the site is new, people are getting used to it and we're trying to help steer people in the right direction.
We've got some guidelines that are coming though shortly that should help clarify things - we'll be looking for feedback on them from everyone so you'll be welcome to add your comments.
Dunno if this is a taboo subject on imoc, but what about investing in a speed detector or (dare i say it) laser diffuser. Fight fire with fire i say! (Also the confused look on a cop when he jumps out from behind a wall to nab you and can't get a reading is priceless!) LOL
i do get your point about the general section and we are taking jinxy`s car up to see Mr Woods.so i should have asked "what is the best route to take a MK1 MR2 to Durham to Paul Woods" then would it have been ok?
If you are going to see Paul, then IMO, you're better leaving the A1M and taking the A19 the rest of the way, coming off the A19 at either Wingate/Castle Eden or the next exit at Peterlee, and drive through Shotton to Haswell.(it's only a few miles from the A19)
If you want stay on the A1 you'll probably want to come off at Bowburn/Durham services.. but you'll have to double back a bit to get to the 'Plough.
