Camber settings

Post by Rik »

Hi,

I have an old alignment printout and it has the figures for the camber on the front down as being

Front left camber = -0.56'
Front Right camber = -1.23'

I'm trying to get to grips with all this - should these figures not ideally be roughly the same? If they're not the same doesn't it mean that one wheel is running different to the other which would make the tyre wear odd and the car drive badly? Or are the differences pretty trivial and is it ok so long as they're within the factory tolerences. Sorry for asking what may be the obvious here but can someone please help me.

cheers.

trouble is as soon as you get in the car it'll change by another half of a degree!

Ideally they should be the same with you sat in the car.

Camber control is appalling on the MR2 so it is constantly changing. I'd normally look to get within half a degree side to side.

So yeah ideally you should get them a bit closer than that. It won't make a mega difference on the road though due to the camber changing so much under compression. How old was that alignment?

If its more than six months i'd suggest getting it re-done.

Thanks Lauren,

That was some time ago and i've since lowered the car. I'm currently going to get some camber adjusting bolts and get everything set up (full laser alignment) with new tyres in the next week or so.

When setting up the camber (and everything) would you advise me to sit in the car then?

Cheers

Rik,

I noticed you've posted the same question in 2 different threads. If you look at the other thread, some guys there have advised against camber bolts. Check it out, just a thought.

Cheers,

i've just read the other one this morning. I thought i'd create a new one as I didn't think i'd get a response on the other thread as it was so long.

As for the camber bolts, i'm going to be using Toyota bolts (check out the store in MR2OC.co.uk for further details). I've had a problem with the way my car drives for the past year and a bit so i'm pretty much willing to try anything! :D

Is it just the adjustable bolts that 'may' have problems?

ok sounds like a good plan. Well i think you'll get pretty bored if you have to sit in the car for 2-3 hours, but you could put some ballast in to represent your weight. Thing is the laser guys may look at you like you are mad, but whenever i have done geo setups i have always setup a car with ballast or a spare body in the drivers and or passenger seats.

A while ago i setup an elise for a driver and passenger both weighing 12stone, so everytime i checked the settings i had to get the other two bearders to sit in the car!

I guess it depends how far you want to go with chasing accurate geo settings. If you think about it there is no way any race engineer for example would dream of doing a geo setup without the driver in the car.

It won't overly matter if you don't i guess. What you could do is put something approximating your weight behind the drivers seat.

Thanks for the advice Lauren, i'll see what the chap says when we meet to alter the camber - I prefer the idea of putting something that would be roughly my weight in the car.
