Track rod ends

Post by mikey2 »

I need to replace the inner track rods on my 91 N/A, can anyone tell me if there is a ball joint from the steering rack to the rod or if the rod just screws into the rack itself, i want to do the job soon, i have the track rods, but not had a look underneath yet, and would rather get some advice than pull it apart to put it back together again. Cheers Mike

The inner rod arm screws into the rack. The rod arm has the ball joint on it not the rack. Check out http://www.twosrus.co.uk/product_info.p ... cts_id=243

a lot cheaper than toyota!

a little stressed now

Post by mikey2 »

Ok, the weather was not great yesterday, so didnt do it then, however, its quite pleasant today, so i got on with it. i must admit, i was pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to get the old ones off, just a case of getting the tab washer off. BUT.........the new track rods i have, have a slightly larger thread for the rack end. little bit of swearing went on, and a lot of thinkin. no way to reduce the threads cos the shaft is not thick enough. SO, back on with the old rod and buy some more i think. cheers for the link above, i will purchase some as soon as i have more than two pennies to rub together.

However, anyone thinking of doing the job, its easy. took no more than 5 mins to get the old one off. and about ten mins to get it on and back on the road. just make sure you mark on the new one where the locking nut is supposed to be, you might stand a chance of not having the tracking miles out. Cheers Mike

i did mine friday morning for the mot and it took me a little longer than 5 mins but maybe mine were a bit rustier, anyway it is is failry simple as long as you have the right tools thanks to a mate of mine.didnt seem to be that much play in my old 1s but peter gidden supplied me with mine and are good quality.
anyway i found that the boots can only be purchased from toyota or pete again can get them for you. no patent boots available so it seems. i could be wrong though.
anyway just thought id have a post of my opinion
