If its the same noise as I have heard (like slowly sucking air through your teeth), I think Peter Gidden told me it was the Charcoal Canister and nothing to worry about. I might be totally wrong as my memory is like crap lately.

I'm sure someone will come along and cofirm or deny this.

Its that or it is air in your coolant...

Back of the car... = Charcoal canister

front of car = coolant air lock..

Someone please correct me if i'm wrong.. :D

It's probably just coolant boiling as it is no longer being pumped around.

Nik

PS: on my 220 mile journeys each week, I drive the last 10 miles off boost and slowly, never hear it if I do this...

yep sounds like boiling coolant. The charcoal canister is more of a buzzing noise.

Admittedly my drives are somewhat spirited but this noise is common on my drive even when i drive the last 5 minutes off boost. Seems to be worse when i leave the car standing running and the engine heatsoaks, as soon as you turn the engine off about 20 seconds later the coolant around the block will boil.

Not much you can do about it.

Funnily enough I just had the coolant changed and this is the first time I've heard that gurgling noise coming from the engine bay. Can't quite hear where exactly but if I put my hand on the hose to/from the cap that says "Do not open when hot!" I can feel it bubbling in the hose. Could I have air trapped in the system? Scared the crap outta me. I spent 15 minutes looking for a leak.

I'm a new tubby owner and have been scratching my head over the burbling noise coming from the engine bay!

So its not a bad thing then? :?

Its not a good thing but also not a bad thing really.. The coolant should not boil. As that is a sign its not working correctly. But its just normal coolant not alot you can do about it. Just try again take a slow drive during the last 5 minutes driving. It should not make any noises. its cus the coolant is no longer being pumped round.

The bubbling of the coolant is perfectly normal and it is a good thing.

It is obsorbing heat from one location, turning into steam, raising to the highest point of the system and cooling .... after it cools, it circulates back down to the course of the heat and turns to steam again, etc ...

This is how the system manages to circulate and cool even after the engine (hence water pump) is shut down.

I could be wrong but I'd heard the reason you only here the bubbling when the engine is off is because the coolant goes into an expansion tank to cool off quicker IIRC. I'm not so sure about that though, I think its just the bubbles rising to the top of the system once the pump is no longer running (as JekylandHyde points out) which just happens to be the re-filling reservoir in the engine bay. Hence why you can hear it so loudly.

I did a little test today. I went for a pretty hard thrash but then drove the last 4 miles totally off boost, crusing at 50mph then let it idle on the drive for 30 seconds, opened the engine lid, killed the power and waited.

Took 9 seconds for the coolant to start boiling around the turbo.

I gave up waiting after 2-3 minutes for it to stop and went inside.
