Charge Temp Monitor

Post by gtech »

Son David had a busy day today, knocked up the Charge Air Temp Monitor, parts from Maplins (prev discussed here), total cost was £6.

Updates every second....

Took it out for a blast and worked well.

Measures from -20c to +70c

Giving it a thrasing showed temp of around 33c

Can actually see from the temp rising when you are pulling hot air through.

Looks well and is the perfect size for the DIN slot as you can see.

Where did you place the sensor to take the reading?

Can you list the parts used etc? Wouldn't mind doing the same on mine.

i pulled the ruber flexi off between the IC out and the tin charge carrier pipe put the sensor in there and put the flexi back on, no air leaks and takes a good reading.

i sourced the parts from maplin the following codes are for the parts, take these to maplins and they should get you the parts;-

FE34M = temp probe
FE33l = temp modual
FE35Q = bezel surround

the modual, you will have to bridge termnals 5 and 16 to make it 1 second readings also unsolder the built in thermo reader (2 sec job) and solder in the new external probe

Just remembered Rory's article in the knowledge Base

This is what you are after harry as it monitors coolant temp in CC instals.

yes it was my son (simmo490). all the parts listed above are the parts that were used. it can measure any air temp on anything i.e CC, IC.

in the past threads i think people have installed them but they either only read up to 50 degrees C or only update every 10 seconds, where as this one updates every second and measures up to 70 degrees c with an accuracy of 1 degrees out

Sounds very similar to my KB article. Nice mod :D

Enis,

People have used my same setup to monitor air temps too. Its just a case of sliding the probe between the CC and intake (in the rubber sock) I used it to monitor coolant temps though :D

Question for you Gtech. Does this screen/sensor run on the cars 12v or did your son have to create a circuit to run it safely? Have you had any problems with the display cutting out randomly? Ive got my display running perfectly now but there was a few teething problems in my circuit design.

12-hour clock display
Serial data output
Temperature sampling rate once per second or once per 10 seconds
High and/or low temperature alarm

Temperature Module Specifications:

-10°C to +40°C±1°C
+40°C to +70°C±2°C
Display: 31/2 digit 12.7mm high LCD
Clock: 12-hour clock
Clock accuracy: ±0.5s/day
Working voltage: 1.5V (1.25V to 1.65V)
Average current: 15µA approx.

I did exactly this a few weeks ago using the same parts. Mine stopped working after a few days tho cos I crushed the cable too much between the hose and solid pipe :roll:

I chose this temp module because it has outputs to drive relays at set points. I intend to use this to drive an intercooler spray in the future.

Think this is probably one of the best modules availible for charge temp monitoring - and the whole lots only cost me about 13 quid.

Just fitted this setup and it works very well so many thanks! I have tucked the sensor in the rubber pipe between the IC hard piping and the throttle body, was a bit fiddly but it's in now.

What are "safe" ranges for intake temps, does anyone know? I am running in low 50's on full boost (1.2 Bar) which sounds high to me. I am waiting for my WI pump to come back from Aqua mist but once it's fitted it will be interesting to see how much the temps drop.

Cheers, Chris

none yet cosmo, I only had the boost turned up last week at millways at the same time as having the WI fitted, only to discover the pump was shot so I am waiting for it to come back.

Not been driving my car very hard but this how weather doesn't help. Is 1.2 bar too much on a Rev3 without cooling? I am not fitting an aftermarket IC until the engine is out next.

I find it interesting how hot the intake gets after the engine is switched off, over 60C!!

Cheers
