[Mk2 Turbo] Clutch change and cambelt service

Post by neilg1977 »

Hi all,

Burnt my clutch out over the weekend and it's within 5k of the cambelt change so I want to pop it in for everything at once.

Any idea on the costs for this?

I was thinking around £450 for clutch supply and fit and then £350 odd for the cambelt work.

Would £750/800 cover it? I will ring around for some quotes but want a ballpark figure to make sure no-one rips me off or doesn't know what the work involved is!

Cheers,

Neil

Nooooooooooooo

To do both at the same time its basically an engine drop. They let the engine drop a bit out of the bottom and tackle them both at the same time. Exactly the same thing was done with mine...

Anyway.... Clutch around 150-200 squids the belts will be around 150 quid for everything including cambelt, a/c, tensioners and a clutch release bearing if you want one which you might as well get. Labour shouldn't be more than 300 so at the very most you should be looking at 600-650.

I was 700 all in including a £300 clutch and that was for changing the clutch, changing the cambelt, ac belt, tensioners and clutch release bearing.

Blimey - thanks all, i'm much happier I asked. The quote was from a garage in Andover who've always done great work for me in the past but it felt a little high....

I'm in Reading, Berks, can anyone recommend anywhere near here? I haven't tried 3s yet but I hear a lot of good things.

If your close enough to 3s go there. They do charge a little extra but you have the peace of mind going with it. Plus if you pay your membership on here you may get favourable treatment.

I was being charged £32 an hour and was charged for 10 hours labour. People who know what they are doing will take a little less time but its easily around 8 hours, 6-7 if your a workhorse like peter lol. Find out the hourly charge and just multiply it by 10 to give you the best guess.

If your thinking of modding the car past 300bhp i suggest upgrading the clutch to a more performance type. You can get one for around 250 and they are well worth it.

No worries - me being slack that's all. I just paid up so all's good.

Is there anywhere I can buy the clutch from myself with a club discount? I think the standard clutches are around 160/200 and if I can get that reduced, I just need to argue over labour ;-)
