[Mk2 Turbo] HELP!!!!!!!!!! i think my turbo's fooked!!! :(

Post by ripley-mr2 »

now, im no mechanic, i know a fair bit about cars, but i dont realy know anything about turbo's, but i think that mines xxxxx!!!

when i got to where i was going on my dinner time today, as i pulled off the byepass (been thrashing it a bit, however i did alow it to warm up fully before i even drove it, as always) i pulled away from the island and i noticed that my boost guage was reading nearly full boost, but it felt like i was running none at all!!! as i got into the lower gears i noticed that when i put my foot down and got past 2000 rpm it was making a horrible noise, like a banging noise and i wasn't getting boost even though the guage was reading it.

is it bu88ered???

if so, how much would it cost me to get a replacement?? and is there anywere locally to me (derbyshire) that can do it??

please help!!!

Matt

Was it def the turbo making noises?
If you have a rev1/2 and the turbos twatted get a CT20b from a rev3+ car money MUCH better spent?

If the turbo is wasted though you wont make much boost at all so it could be electrical problems?

wel, no im not getting any boost. but the guage says that i am. the best way to describe the noise is like the wheel of fortune.

would thats turbo be a direct bolt on or would it require other changes?? how much would it cost to have one of these fitted?

Matt,

If your crankshaft is gone then its a pretty big job to replace. It is more of a common problem with the Rev 1, 2 engines as the oil pressure relief valve sticks in the oil pump, causing oil starvation at high RPM's. To replace the crank with the engine in the car will require the gear box to be removed.... big PITA. If the crank has gone then it will have been damaged and is best to replace in most cases. You might be able to get away with just replacing the bearings but this is usualy a quick+short fix and wont last if the crank is damaged.

So in total I think £750 isnt too bad a price but that is dependent on what parts are being replaced for that price.

Used crank... expect to pay around £100 (make sure it has been crack tested)

New bearing set approx £85 (Non-Toyota... but can be matched to the crank by any machine shop) Toyota genuine bearings will be around £200+

New oil pump £85 from Mr T

Plus oil and sundries

Expect to pay about £500 labour for all of this... its a big job. Think of it as a clutch change and timing belt plus 3 - 4 hours to replace the crank.

I had a simular problem with a Celica GT4 I owned. The bottom end went and I replaced the bearings... 3 months later it was knocking again. In the end I replaced the engine.

Is your engine light on and have you checked the codes? Its just that your symptoms sound very similar to mine and I have a blown knock sensor....about £100 to replace...worth checking?

yeah, i have heard good reports of that place, but as i dont want to risk running the car (or at least for not a long distance) and i dont have a means of towing, i would rather find somewhere closer to home.
