Lithium soap base glycol grease?

Post by Ian Geary »

Need a bit of advice.

I'm rebuilding my clutch slave and master cylinders. The trusty BGB tells me to coat the piston in the above.

A trip to Halfords just resulted in blank stares. They had Castrol LM lithium grease on show, plus lithium spray grease, but nothing about soap or glycol.

Searching on IMOC I found only references to brake slider grease - nothing to do with the clutch.

Searching on the net I found a few odds, like this on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MULTI-PURPOSE-LIT ... dZViewItem

But again no mention of glycol...

I'll probably go for this (1, not all 44) unless I hear otherwise.

Thanks in advance for any help

Surely you'd just cover the piston with brake fluid before installing it :?

soaking it in brake fluid will be my fall back, yes.

But there does seem to be traces of grease around the rubber seals, and the BGB mentions this type of grease qutie a few times.

In balance, I think the risk of damage to the seals from using a petroleum grease is a bit too high, so unless I can find a definite non-petroleum based grease, I won't bother with it.

Cheers

Ian, I guess you've fodun the posts about Sliding pin grease - I'd give brakes International a ring and see if they can help.

Failing that, brake fluid is OK.

I did hear of someone mistakenly using WD40 and the boots around the cyinders fell to bits
