Mk1 in NZ with 20v writeup (56k, probably not)

Post by HELBND »

Well ok i thought id share my MR2 project with you lot, see what you thought. About September last year, i bought an '84 AW11 MR2 as a daily while the supra was off the road. It wasnt in the best condition, but it ran

excuse quality of pics - except for the ones at meremere, they were all taken off my phone

this lasted a while, but then the big end bearings decided to let go. and the supra still wasnt ready. i needed a new engine, but i didnt really want to put another bluetop in. i decided to go with a silvertop 20v 4age. Apparently a relatively easy swap. While buying all the parts i would need for the conversion, i got sidetracked and bought a parts car

another '84 AW11, but with a blown head gasket. However this one had a few goodies on it. it came with white watanabe style rims, a momo steering wheel, a 5Zigen branded cat-back exhaust system, braided brake lines, a brand new water pump in box (sure why not :-? ) and a haynes manual (VERY useful). So i figured for $350 it was worth the space it would take up.

With parts car in my posession, i bought everything else i needed to convert AW11 number one to a 20v. I purchsed a silvertop 20v 4age out of a facelift levin, with only ~50,xxxkms on it

So the MR2 was taken to a mates place so we could use his garage. Taking the old bluetop out was pretty easy, but boy was it in awful condition - previous owners hadnt been very kind to it, i dont think

When weight reduction goes too far

now a FWD silvertop gearbox (c52) has the shifters on the wrong side of the gearbox, and modifying one was out of mine or my mates leaague, so i decided to use the standard bluetop box (c50). We used the bluetop flywheel, but obviously a standard bluetop clutch wasnt gonna cut it. So i purchased this manly looking clutch set up

Now when i bought the parts car, i fell in love with the white and black color scheme, so i decided the red one would be painted to match it. While the silvertop was out, the rocker cover, sparkplug cover and intake cover were painted to suit this color scheme

The engine bay was also painted while it was empty

Then all that remained for the conversion was to get it all in there. Easier said than done, but not too bad. the engine and box themselves bolted straight on to the original mounts. the accelerator cable had to be relocated so that it went far enough around to the new throttle position. The fuel lines had to be extended by about an inch, and we had to make up an entirely new section of piping for the main radiator hose (filler cap in rear of car, radiator at front). Wiring took about a week, and then she was ready to go

I got slack with pictures, so thats all i got at the time, but as you can see, it fits in there nicely.

So after it was all done and the new clutch was bedded in, i headed to meremere to find out what it could do. On nothing great tyres, no passenger seat or spare tyre, a full tank of gas and street tyre pressures, i managed to run a 15.43s @ 140km/h which i was reasonably pleased with :D

It now has the mags off the parts car, a white supercharged AW11 side vent, and white bonnet and headlight covers (were in better condition, and i sold the red bonnet). As for future plans, who knows? Get the supra working, and then perhaps a turbo conversion. But more likely, just a white paint job and leave it like it is... It is supposed to be my daily, after all

and the latest photos...

and pic with the white bonnet, vent, etc. it started raining before i could finish the swapping of mags, they will all match once i can get the motivation up

Thats one engine I like seeing in a mk1 =P~ , it seems to offer the right level of power and sophistication associated with the mr2 =D> Pity they are hard to come by in the UK :(

Nicely done with the white engine/enginecompartment, but personally I would have kept the outside red/black ;)

cheers - i was originally going to go red and black, and engine/engine bay would have been painted to match, but i fell in love with the blackand white color scheme when i bought the parts car, so the whole thing will be getting a repaint

well lucky for me, theyre cheap as chips over here. if the exchange rate is still how i remember it, its about 3 pounds to one of our dollars. so i paid the equivalent of roughly 200 pounds for the engine, but i paid twice what they normally go for, just because its a facelift silvertop, and it only had 45,000kms on it.

Cheers for the comments guys :D

white/black is nice also, I thought you were going for a red/black/white outside paintsceme, my mistake ;)

Ok so while the 20v is in the shop for a rebuild, i got a bit bored and decided to buy another AW

the new one is an 86 Facelift S/C T-top, but didnt come with an engine

i plan on taking advantage of its stripped down state, to get rid of the minimal rust thats there, and then chuck in a bluetop and get it registered, while later plans may or may not involve a blacktop 7agte :-$

heres some pics

I also bought a trueno

well, i finally got the 20v back from being rebuilt, and found out i need $500 worth of rust to be fixed for a warrant of fitness (vehicle inspection, declares your car roadworthy, lasts 6 months) :(

however i also installed a tasty set of facelift taillights on my baby :D

Image

was a bit more complicated than i thought it would be, the bottom clips in the centre panel are in a different place, and i had to drill a couple of new holes for the bolts. not too hard, and a huge improvement in looks, so im stoked 8)
