Side strip removal - opinions appreciated - pics included!!

Post by nailmonkey »

Hi Guys and Gals,

I've been thinking about having my side strips removed as they need respraying anyway, so what do you think about having them all filled and smoothed in?

I saw the MR2 that Skywalker posted recently that had this done and I think that it looked pretty good so here's a photoshop of what I think it would look like..

PS: Already modifying some side vents to one single hole, car will also have a Rev5 spoiler.

Any thoughts/opinions greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Nik

Personally I dont like it when people smooth in the side strips. I think it spoils the lines of the car and makes it too plain.

Much better on the before picture!

Plus the side strips hide a multitude of bolts for removal of parts... for example from your after picture, what would happen if you needed to remove the front bumper?.... you would need to pay for it to be blended again.

The problem is those side vents come off so by smoothing them in your limiting future mods.
Unless your happy to pull them off and wreck what you'd had done already.

Hi JUIC'IN,

Thanks for the reply, I though that it was a bit plain when I first did the photoshop, but now it's really growing on me!

I think that it draws much more attention to the curves of the door and I also feel that it needs the single scoop to stop it looking too plain....

Thanks,

Nik

I like the smoothed out version, but what do I know - I've got a car where the designer had a curve phobia!!!

Ahh yes, but the Mk1 has a classic shape in a completely different way. That's why I bought one!!

Go for it but don't blend the bumpers in.

Could work, my only comment is the inlet holes are to big, they need the centre centre section otherwise I can see your neighbours cat finding a nice bed in the evenings.

Also im wondering if you will get alot of wind noise to?? :-k

At the end of the day mate, if you like it do it. Its your motor.
Running: 313.8BHP @ fly and 285lb torque on 1.15bar.

my rev2 has TOM's Skirts on it which gives it the completely open side pods and i think it looks good without the bar in the middle and as yet have not found any small animals or homeless childern curled up in them.

but each to their own you could always try it and if you dont like it change it back

I prefer how it looks as standard TBH.

For a start, removing all the detail makes the side of the car look very bland.

And the long thin horizantal lines emphasize the 'low but long' proportions of the car, which is what you want after all, being an MR2.

Hi Everybody,

Cheers for all the comments, I'm still undecided myself so the input is useful.

I wasn't planning on smoothing the bumpers in so it should be possible to remove the front bumper if the toblerone trim is smoothed into the wing? :-k

Good points, about the side scoop though but what jobs actually require this to come off? It will also have black mesh over it to stop cats etc getting in there and besides both of my cats are way too fat to get through that little hole!!!

Also looks pretty good with a standard side vent and smoothed strips but I've left the photoshop at home...

Thanks,

Nik

Youlll need to add a side repeater in the wing if you want to pass an MOT :-)

Lol, true. That's another car part that's sitting in my kitchen waiting to go on.
