Suggestions for my install ..

Rite I gave in, after having huge ICE systems in my old BM’s I had to do it to the MR2!! Lol

So what I am doing to start with …

My Current Alpine Head unit

Audiobahn AXA3X 3 Way active Crossover
Audiobahn A6004T 4 Chan 75W RMS @ 4Ohm (150W RMS @ 4 Ohm Bridged)
Audiobahn A8000T Mono 800RMS @ 2 Ohm
Audiobahn 1 Farad Power Cap

Audiobahn AW1206T 12” 1500W RMS Dual 4Ohm Subwoofer

Only the one sub atm as I think 2 would kill me!! lol

At the moment I sticking with my speakers that I have which are

Infinity 6.5” Coaxial Speakers running with stock Toyota tweeters
Kicker 3.5” Coaxial Speakers (Worst bass handling speakers I have ever hear!!)

I want to change this speaker arrangement … what can I do?

Audiobahn make a Component set that comprises of a 6.5” + 4” + tweeter that kicks out 320W RMS. I can bridge my 4 chan amp to feed these 150W. Thing is, can I fit 4” speakers into the rear locations?

Any other speaker suggestions? Anyone fancy showing me there install?

My personal preference, taking money into account, is the alpine type-r's for the front and 4" type-s's for the rear. Stay away from the larger type-s's coz AFAIK they are crap but for the 4" application it doesn't really matter as long as you can get a bit of sound. I only have 1 10" sub hooked up to a bridged channel giving 500w peak.

The Sub setup your going for sounds ideal. I WAS going to put 2 boxes in there but i'm too tall to have the sub box behind me, however. I can promise you that you will certainly only need 1. With every car i have had a sub in it has been mounted in the boot. I always had 2 and i always had them hooked up to 1000w amp. At the moment i am only using the 1 and i am also only using the 1 channel (well 2 channels bridged) and the damn thing almost shakes my fillings out. Imagine how loud the beamer was when you were sitting in the cabin with it cranked. Now imagine cranking it and sticking your head in the boot, that's what its like in the 2. There aint much air in there for the sub to have to move around so you feel everything.

Strange thing is that it aint so loud outside because 1 the sound deadening is soooooooooo good and 2 because the speaker sounds a lot louder than normal simply because of the space its in and distance it is from you.

What you have sounds good enough to me. At the moment i have standard compoenents in the front with itchyfanni ones in the back and the sound quality aint bad actually. Here is what i am aiming for though.....

Sony minidisk player with Ipod adapter
Sony 10 Disc DVD Changer mounted under bonnet
7" motorised monitor with built in TV tuner above MD player
8" Sunvisor Monitors (pair)
6.5" Alpine Type-r's in the front
4" Apline Type-s's in the rear
10" SPLX Sub (just the one i have just now, its soooo loud and deep)
1000w Boschman amp (cheapest of the cheap yet the sound quality is excellent) Mounted under bonnet running the front components and the sub.

I do have another 600w amp but i think that may be overkill as i would only be installing it to run the rears. I wouldn't even bother amping the rear's TBH they aint that good and the only reason i have them connected is coz a little sound is better than nothing.

I would say that the rears need amping up the most!

With a good amp you will be able to actually get them performing! Cut all bass going to them and using a crossover get the input to them in there handling range then turn them up At the end of the day there only good for one thing and that’s treble othere wise there pointless!! lol

Stereo has an active crossover on it and the back speakers can't handle the power just from it with 0 bass. I've had to set the fade 3 notches to the front so that i can crank them without them blowing.

They are crap though lol.

i had Alpine 3.5" ones in rear till they popped now onto my kicker ones .... 35W RMS so will see how they like being run off the 75 rms amp lol

What kinda music do you listen to? I only really listen to Rock/metal music so a 12" SUb would be an overkill for me. My set-up at the mo is:

Pioneer 7" flip out screen
Pioneer TV tuner
Pioneer AVP9000r audio visual unit (5.1 processor)
Pioneer single DVD player (5.1- connected via optical lead)
10 disc pioneer CD changer
6 disc DVD changer

a/d/s 236is 6.5" comps up front
Pioneer TS (I think) 4" coaxials in rear
2 x RE 8" subs (yet to be fitted)
Pioneer 4" speaker for center speaker (yet to be fitted)

POwering all that a Audiobahn A5100T 5.1 amp which kicks out:
125rms x 2, 75wrms x 3 and 300wrms for sub.

I'm pleased so far with the set-up, but i'm thinking of selling the RE's and just get a single 10" sub....not sure yet.

As far as rear's go, if I wasn't going with the 5.1 set-up I would ditch the rear's as with a decent front set-up (I.e. comp's getting a good 75wrms or more) you won't need anymore noise from behind your head! Also it will ruin your soundstage, as we all know when you listen to music the music is in front of you, not behind you!

So in my opinion I would ditch the rears and just spend some more money on a set of 6.5" components.....jobs a good'en!

Music ... funny this cos mainly its fast beat music so a 12 isn't really what i'd want but i also listen to a bit rnb and hiphop for which its great ...

Already had the sub so wasn't going to buy a new one

To stop the base from damaging the rear speakers put a 220uF non polarized electrolytic capacitor in series with the +ve line.

This will act like a first order high pass filter thus blocking most of the base (<150Htz approx) and damaging the speaker coil.

Then all you need to do is turn the base back to normal on the head unit so you can enjoy it out of the front speakers.

If the front ones start distorting you can also place a 100uF cap in series with them to which will remove most of the base below 80Hts, then you can let the sub do all the work.
