Engine bay holes and a bootmount

Post by Jimbob »

Im looking into the possibilitys of a boot mount IC.

Does anyone know if this has MOT implications? Or if strengthening around the holes is required.

Just wanna know before the grinder comes out!

Someone like Hedgehog dodger should be a good person to help on this one

Cheers,

James

Thanks for your response but that is a boot mounted head tank for the charge cooler system he is using.

I am after mounting the whole Intercooler in the boot. So large holes are required for the throttle body/inlet manifold and the pipe from the turbo to IC.

You sound like you're doing what I'm doing!

No MOT implications that I know of. As there won't be sharp edges around the outside of the car etc. I'm just going to cut near exactly and use a rubber seal to protect the pipes from the flush metal.

Then as for cooling 2 ducts into the boot with 2 12" fans in there should cool things down.

Thats it Dave.

Just unsure of what more needs doing? I could weld some strengthening in? I will be using some rubber finishing strip that is reinforced and grips nicely onto plate up to about 2.5-3mm. PM me if you want the contact to get some I can reccomend it highly!

I was just a little worried about chassis flex, am I being paranoid?

Cheers

you're worrying far too much..
theres no way cutting a hole in the floor of your trunk will cause flex..thats why i did it..

Yeah you're being overly paranoid... T
he boot wall is very thin anyway and if that prevents flex... well then putting holes in should "stiffen te flex" due to the circular holes being non-compressable...

but it will make no noticeable difference!

Yeah I'll drop you a pm about the contact... do you know where you're getting your pipes made up from yet? As I've been looking and I can't find a 180 degree bend anywhere!

That is one very sweet MR2!!

I remember seeing a boot mounted IC not so long ago in a red MR2. The IC was massive and took up the whole boot!

I think JUIC'IN or GTSCHRIS.COM may have the pic/info

HTH

Mark Powell from Leeds (on here somewhere) has done this boot intercooler conversion.
