how to prop up your mr2?

Post by Hurstie1981 »

Hello,

Just a quick one. When using a jack to lift up my two, i use just an ordinary trolley jack and use the correct jacking points. I want to be able to remove the jack leaving the car raised, incase some idiot thinks it would be funny to lower it with a wheel missing, damaging the car. A, whats the best thing to prop it up with, and where abouts should it/they be positioned?

Thanks

Graham

Buy some axle stands form halfraud, bout 10 quid i think jack up your car using the sub frame as jacking point position axe stands under jacking point either side just bit further back the the rear joint of the doors, lower car onto stands!

Hmmm, what about just propping one side up? Ive refurbed the nearside wheels, and want to do the offside ones, and i could do them both at the same time.....?

you can but i would have thought its better to do the front then back or the other way round, i never like the look of a car on its side although im sure it would be fine.

Hmmm, ill see what i can do, ill probably get two set of axle stands! So if i jack up at the usual points, and place the stands a couple of inches away it would be no problem?

Did you send it last night? Had a few beers and remember a pop up but then for some reason I deleted all my PMs... can you resend it?

A small tip here but whenever i want to work on the rear of my car i jack it up at the rear gearbox to chassis mount as its fairly low, then jack the car up in the air and put an axle stand under each rear sill jacking point.

If you do it that way, not only is it quicker you get round the problem of the jack being too close to the axle stand.

LOL, well it will tend to tilt a little toward the O/side as it goes up because of the engine being heavier than the gearbox.

That said its not a problem. For some reason on my MK1 when the jack won't go any higher i can easily get the axle stand under the n/side but for the o/side i normally get Mark just to lift it a fraction under the wheel arch and slot the o/side axle stand in.

I've done it like this thousands of times, with no problem, honest!

That'll be a dud 4 cars then! I've just done a lot of work on my cars over the years, swopping engines, i do everything myself. New car will be straight up on the stands next week as i need to sort the brakes and swop the suspenders over.
