Flamed MR2

Post by juliankv73 »

Hi,

I just saw this image on the US mr2oc.com site and it got me thinking about fire prevention on a 2.

Image

What do people have in the way of fire extinguishers for their 2's and where is the best place to get something like that?

What type, sizes systems etc plumbed in or hand held etc .... :-k

That's our very own Pete. (Irish plates if you look)

I've got a diddy extinguisher that would be as much use as a potato in an emergency, but it makes me feel happy.

I always carry a small extingusiher in the glovebox- but I wouldn't expect it to be much help in a fire ..

Pete ISTR actually rebuilt that MR2 after the fire. There's some video clips I've seen of him gooning around the Hairpin at Anglesey in it..

If you were spending big money on an engine, I'd certainly consider a built-in fire supressing system for the engine bay. Insurance comapies tend to get jumpy though if you list this as a mod, as its only usually done on competition cars.

Paul Woods did the same to a mk1 to see how long the engine would last being redlined with no oil and coolant. Held out about 4 minutes...

I took the rear glove box between the seats off and mounted a halfords extinguisher on the bracket so it sits around neck hight.

Probably won't do much, and because i've cable tied it to the firewall (incase i hit something, i don't want to going through the wingscreen) it'll take me ages to actually use it in an emergency.

Don't half look cool though as it's mounted parallel with the floor ;)

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.......I did the video for the famed "Paul Woods" Mk1 Blow out, and having seen the ball of flames that generated, it made me realise that no fire exitinguisher is gonna help.

What you did'nt see in the cut down video, is that when the engine burst into flames, it threw oil on the underneath which then burst into flames, so in reality the whole of the engine bay and underneath was in flames, Paul had a big extinguisher and it did nothing at all really :-(

So the advice is................RUN LIKE HELL

I have a medium extinguiser bracket mounted on the glovebox. If I saw flames from the engine bay I would not even bother and I would run.

If I saw smoke I would flip the lid and unload my foam ;-) into anything that looked smoking. Then run.

These things go bang in a big way :D

If you opened the lid I have the feeling you wouldn't be running...

The way to do it is to pop the lid & empty the whole thing through the gap. If the flames are stopping you doing this, you should already have been running!

I saw a BMW go up in flames, it took less than a minute before the flames were licking round the arches & the whole front end & dash was well burning when the fire brigade got there.

A friend from work saw a bloke crash into a lamp post & the front set on fire. The bloke was trapped & they used 2 halfords type extinguishers to keep the flames from him, but couldnt put it out. They ended up using a tow rope to rip the door off the car to get to him & someone soaked some sheets from a nearby hotel & kept him wet until the fire brigade got there. I carry two halfords type now. One in the bonnet (mr2) & boot (406) and both have one in the cabin too. Even though it may not put a fire out 30 quid isnt much to pay to possibly buy you some time & I got the aluminium finish ones so they look cool too!.
