Squeaky suspension

Post by terminater2_uk »

I have the usual knock going over speed ramps from the back of the car which I assume is worn droplinks.
But the front sounds more like rusty bed springs and nothing like a knock.
Anyone know how to cure this?

Squeak

Post by Paul »

I have the same thing. I recently replaced all four springs, all four shocks and all four droplinks, as well as the front topmounts. The squeak-over-bumps was there before I changed all that, and is still there. Seems to come from the pass/rear on mine and you can recreate the noise with the car stationary by bouncing it up and down. Having changed so many worn out components, curing all the other problems I had, but leaving the squeak is a little soul destroying... Wish I knew what was causing it! #-o

Why would the strut knock?

dont know mate, but we took it apart and when you held the top of the strut and compressed it, it knocked when coming back up

I've done the same ( Struts, topmounts, springs, droplinks ) I've got that same squeek. So it must be either the tie bar bushes, control arm bushes or anti-roll bar bushes, Got myself a poly-bush kit and I'm hoping that cures it [-o<

noisy suspension

Annoyingly, my front replacement droplinks are now rattling like crazy too. I took them off the other day and the rose joints are now totally loose and floppy. Think I will try the mini cooper S rear droplinks as a replacement next as they are supposed to be cheap whilst doing the job. Blueprint also make them for the tubby and they cost £65 each. As for the squeak - if any of you cure it - please share the knowledge... at the moment, my solution involves turning up the radio, but I suppose I'd better check the rear bushes soon... more scraped knuckles.

When you put the springs in its essential they sit inside the (new) rubber seat, to prevent squeeks, the top mount can and have been put on incorrectly in the past causing them to creak, the knocking from the strut suggest the top bush is worn due to lateral movent, the bush wears away allowing metal on metal contact thats amplified when the weight of the car is sitting on them.
