what is the legal position and mot position regarding a decat on n/a mr2. mine is 1992 g-ltd and dont really want to replace the cat once a year.

If you're on a J plate you're OK, K will need a cat for the MOT

I know what mine is (rev2) after i had it tested for recent trackday at Bedford. I know its not a rev1 but i guess it will be similare?

106db @ 0.5m, 5K rpm, 45deg angle from left/passenger side exhaust.

Yep, Mongoose and Decat. Much louder than i was expecting.............and needless to say it didnt meet the noise limits for the trackday either (hence the cat stayed on after MOT so could do trackday).

But it did sound loud!, fairly threatening up to 3k, markedly louder (real loud!) between 3 and 4k and then just howls upto limit!

that sounds like music to my ears!
although 106db may be a bit to loud

That is loud! I would have guessed at 85-95db! Was it tested when it was cold or something?

Remember that with the MR2 being mid engined the sound meter also picks up induction noise too.

I was kinda holding off de-catting until I drove the missus' new X-reg 1.7 Puma at the weekend. The bloody thing is nippier than my NA and I'm not having it.

Add to that, the guy who MOT'd my motor drove it to his workshop and then told my brother-in-law afterwards that it "wasn't very good at low revs". (I have always known that in my heart but hearing it from someone else second-hand has cheesed me off and spurred me into action.)

Once I've de-catted, I'm going to chip it when I have a few quid scraped together. I'm not looking for massive improvements performance-wise, just something that is a bit perkier through the revs and more deserving of the car's sporty appearance.

Yep I totally agree with you there. The N/A soon feels slow once you get used to it, doesn't seem right as the car looks quick. A lot of these newer cars are coming out with good performance figures, especially TD's and it's embarassing having to rev like mad to keep up with them. A chip and de-cat should help a bit but don't expect major power increases.
