[Mk2 NA] Decatted Today!! :-)

Post by Goldy »

Ended up having my decat pipe fitted at the local garage, as the state of the flanges and bolts on the old cat were beyond belief!! Tried to get them off yesterday with hacksaws, drills and spanners but to no avail!!

The new pipe has made such a difference, my midrange pickup is vastly improved and it revs a bit more freely at the top end. I'm astounded at the difference, and i'm loving the new exhaust note

Best £40 i've spent in a long time 8)

Oh god yeah. After 3 years of ownership, I was getting bored with the performance of my rev2 n/a, so one day whipped the exhaust off, smashed the cat out with anything long enough to shove in there, kicked it round the garage for a bit, bolted it back on to the car, and was amazed. Cats choke engines, especially old cats that are probably blocked with crud anyway. Felt like a different car, just roared in the high revs. No probs MOT either, mine is an April 92 Registered car. Best 2 hours I ever spent.... 8)

After having a look @ the exhaust flange, and the garage telling me its knackered, i'm probably going to be looking for a new exhaust some time soon! Mongoose may well be on my shopping list

As I use the Mk2 as a daily driver, I want to keep it relatively quiet - I've got a Mongoose on the Mk1 for when I want to make a noise

Find that too - inside is relatively quiet but outside and behind the car all hell is breaking loose  :D \:D/ 8) great for tunnels.

With Decat is does get pretty loud even inside the car - if you take the soundproofing out from behind the seats it gets even louder still (time for the ear plugs lol )

hmmm.. I've been toying with this on my missus Rev1 N/A.

Think I should gut the cat or get a decat?

Did mine about 2 months ago, a mongoose and a de-cat pipe.

I must admit I thought it would be louder inside the car but its not too bad, my only gripe (well not really a gripe more of a mild niggle) is the extra vibrations you get with it. ie at 40-50 mph the door mirrors vibrate and at 65-70 mph the rear veiw mirror vibrates so much the first time I noticed I though my eyes where going funny.

Still loving it though 8)

Don't really think it makes that much difference on an n/a as the cat pipe design itself isn't that restrictive just the massive catylist in it  . The only reason I bought a pipe was that the cat was totally corroded and would need to be binned once i'd taken it off.

I'd deffo do it again given the option!! I'd be intrested to know how many horses it frees up as well.

Yes it's decatted, it's replaced with a piece of pipe with the flanges welded to both ends (cheeky custom job) hence TOTALLY straight through. It's probably what makes it a touch louder than most because there's no silencer, but tons of muffler, u can see the muffles on the tail pipes of mine. Much more sophisticated sound at different revs.

DC Design sell them I think.

I have just put a blueflame exhaust and decat on my rev3 N/A.
Sounds just right.

Smells really rich now though, anyone else experienced this??? :-s

Not noticed a smell of running any richer. But have noticed a sort of "windy/whistly" sound (as described by my missus)

Also seems alot more raspy too. Nice little increase in power though. She's well chuffed with it.

Out of intrest did you decat in the end or just gut the cat that was on there. I assume it'll make different noises depending on the shape of it?

Just gutted the existing cat.

Got my missus to do it while I did her brakes. Quite a productive day actually :D

I'm assuming its because its not that thick material on the actual cat.
