Arrrgh!! My car is a write off **PICS**

Post by craigthestig »

Can't believe it! I've not owned it much more than a month!

I still dont know how it happened, really took me by surprise. Just took the roundabout at "normal speed", not fast at all. Maybe oversteered it a bit and road was very wet, but as soon as the back end slipped slightly out i ended up in a 360 spin into a road sign.

I read all the reviews about these cars being a deathtrap and that the back end slips out so easily but i have never before had a problem, always felt in complete control of the car. I put that down to the fact mine has traction control but, obviously i should have still taken a bit more care...

Anyway here are the pics of the car (and the road sign). Dont think this will polish out! £3000 worth of damage...

I'm so gutted! I seem to have the worst luck with cars! ](*,)

sorry to see a rare coloured tubby smashed up but to be honest thats just a door that needs replacing, i dont know who gave you a 3k estimate. the back alloy could be refurbished and a new door from the scrappers and resprayed yourself. if you didnt tell insurance company save up and do it yourself so you dont lose NCB and your car

Sorry to see that mate - looked in nice condition too. I always wanted the turbo version in that colour but mine is just an N/A. It seems a shame that it has to be written off - could you get it off the insurers and get some more opinions?

So easy to lose the back end on mr2s,in the wet very easy, looks like the sill has had it to.

theres a whole list of things wrong with it unfortunately according to my local insurance repairs garage.

the door hit one pole of the signpost and the rear wheel hit the other pole, so the whole rear suspension/axle is bu88ered too. i reckoned that it could be put right for half of the estimate i got but who knows!

think i have no option but to say goodbye to it and wait for the insurance company to pay out... but i'm no expert cos this is the first serious accident i've had and first claim ever.

i dont think the council can charge me for the signpost though as there's nothing to prove it was me i dont think... :-k

:( harsh. I spun mine yestersday too on a roundabout at 40mph ... same colour too, zircon blue. But I managed to save it.

hard luck, might be worth buying it off the insurance cheap and breaking it? rare colour so there may be a demand for parts... door, bonnet, wings, bootlid, engine lid etc.... :-k

Bummer, lovely colour too :( Wonder if your low profile tyres played a part? They are more prone to losing traction quicker. TBH though, once the back end is gone it's usually gone for good.

Might be worth asking if you can buy it back as salvage as you'd get a fair bit if you broke it.

TBH i didnt even know you could do that. when can you buy it back? do you have to wait for the claim to be completely finalised...?

and how much can i expect to pay them for it?

I think once they tell you how much they are going to give you for your car you have the option of buying it back. It may be worth it, it all depends on what they offer you according to the book value of your car. Your car looks in very good condition so you should get quite a bit for spares if you decided to break it.
Gutted for you though m8  yours is the same colour as mine. I lost the back end on a roundabout doing 20 in 2nd and mines an NA its easy to do and once its gone your pretty much along for the ride. Dont let this put you off getting another one! :D

damn roundabout-syndrome hits again. Its such a dangerous place to be in a mid engine car like ours. remember, youre kinda performing a scandanavian flick when you go too fast through a roundabout which is the preferred rally method for chucking your rear end out.

Really feelin for ya Craig, I've been right where you are mate. My car looks great (shut up mikeJC! ) yet believe it or not it wrote off a Mk V Golf, a Rav 4, and a BMW 740 when it when into a downhill slide and I had to thow it into a barrier to avoid an even worse situation. A pillar reallignment, used door, wing and rad , bit of paint and bonza!!! Back on the road. Nothing like a 'cash' job. Job was perfect too. had experts not able to see any sign.

So there is hope mate. If the insurance company has not been informed yet, thoroughly investigate repair costs and get a few opinions mate. Also consider that if it get written off , it will get categorized. If its cat D (most likely) then you can buy it back, usually for a good price. At this point mate you'll get the remainder in a cheque. Now at this point if you can get sum1 to fix it for cheap enough it might actually be worth fixing, it reall for you to do the maths especially if after the sill, you can do the door and wing yourself which are considerably easier jobs. So if you are sentimental about your car (like me! ) you could end up with it back and a bit of extra cash too. Obviously resale value is now affected but then you did get that cheque so remember how much the car REALLY stand you at.

Whatever happens mate, glad to hear youre safe and well and take your time to decide what to do. It always saddens me when people break cars as a first option but then like I said, I'm very sentimental about cars.

Dont always belive the insurance inspector, i had one out a couple of years ago to look at my citroen AX GT as i had crashed it. first he listed what he said needed replacing and then said the car was twisted and impossible to repair. I then asked my dads mate (who has been working in a bodyshop for over 30 years) to have a look at it. He said it needed a bonnet, bumper, radiator, light and wing and would take a few hours to fix and there was a AX GT at the local scrap yard. It saved me hundeds.

Ill second that mate, hence my advice to get several opinions. Toyota dealer took one look at my car after the damage and said it was fooked and that the chassis was obviously knackerd. yeah, right, what-ev-er!!!! [-X
