How to torque up those hard to get bolts??

Post by Paul R »

Hi,

How are you supposed to torque up the hard to get bolts/nuts on a 3sGTE. For instance, the 4 nuts that go on the studs for the turbo to manifold? I can torque two of them up, but the other two are in-accessible with a torque wrench? How do you guys do it? Is there a special 'torque spanner' or something?

Cheers,

Paul.

With and angle grinder cut in 2 mm deep hole on each flat side of the head, then use a screw driver and hammer to tap it round tight!

Lol .... makes wiring up an EMS tricky though
Small turbos - they're not big and they're not clever!

Just say NO to small turbos!

Extension bar people !! Some bolts that you can't get into in a 4" range, but 8" range you can ! I've had no issues applying torque to any of the major bolts. 8)

but two of the manifold/turbo bolts are covered by the manifold.....it's impossible no matter how long your extension is!

All are accessible ... even with the turbo in place ! ??

These ones:

There isnt enough room to get a socket in there, let alone a torque wrench!!!

Blimey !! now you show me !! Good luck !!

I usually assemble the turbo on the floor first with the manifold, then lift the entire turbo / exhaust manifold assembly in place.

Those two just need to go on with a spanner and knock it clockwise with a weighty hammer till it wont budge any more.

These need to be tight as they're prone to coming loose and also usually kills off the gasket too - meaning all the turbo has to come off to replace the gasket !

If I remember, they rectified the access to them two on the rev 3's !

Get that timing cover painted black too !! :D Its neither silver or black and doesn't belong in the engine bay !! :) Consider the plastic wiring loom over the cams too !!

Also, if your looking for the right silver paint to bling up the engine bay a little, go for some aluminium paint... thats what I usually use :)

Hi,

Dont worry, that picture was taken before I stripped the engine! The turbo, manifold and downpipe is in my living room as we speak!! :)

do you really think I'd put the engine back in the car all oily and dirty like that!!???
