[Mk2 ] Front tyre wear.. ?

Post by eltonbird »

Due to the way only the inside inch or so of the front tyres seem to get any real wear and end the life of what otherwise look like almost perfect tyres, has anyone ever tried getting their front tyres swapped around at the first sign of wear?

From the way my last tyres wore out, It would seem to me that doing this at the right time could almost double the lifespan of a set of front tyres!

Does anyone think doing this would have any negative, or potentially dangerous side effects?

I had this, the insides were bald, the outsides not touched, you could swap them round I guess or adjust the camber!

This is just due to the way the Mk2 is setup. You could swap them side to side to even them up - but I used to find the difference in wear was only 1-2mm at most.

I'd not worry and just replace both of them them when they're needed - the cost of swapping them rim to rim is probably going to be at least £20.

I might just give it a go then. Last time I got new tyres (Goodyear GS-D3's) alround. My rears have just worn out and were changed last week.
In the same time, the fronts have only worn down the tread on the very inside edge only, but the rest of the tyre looks literally brand new.

I guess 20 quid or so now could save me about 160 odd quid on a replacement set. If I feel it has any effect on the feel of the car I can always get some new ones later.
