gearbox help needed for MR2 Turbo J plate

Post by Shings »

Hi

Got a J plate MR2 turbo and the box has just blown, bit strange as the car has just had a new clutch (10 miles) and it went on a greasey wet road, and under normal acceleration- oh yeh and the car also only runs 5psi at the mo due to it having a previous slipping clutch.

Havent inspected it yet but no drive at all and a big pool of diff/gearbox oil at the side of the road. Goes into gear.

Questions-
How much should I be looking at for a replacement 2nd hand item?
Does anyone know where I could find one other than here/ebay?
What sort of power do you normally need for the boxes to go?
How do I tell a turbo box from a a none turbo item?
Would a none turbo box' suffice?

Really big thanks for your help guys,

Jake

Jake,

Think someone on PassionFord has one for sale - one of Chop's mates.

Will PM you on there.

The basic quick difference between turbo and non turbo 'boxes is the turbo 'box has an oil pipe that comes out and goes back in! (for oil cooler fitment).

A little more fundamental are the difference in ratios.

Lol! I think it would be easier for him to look for the oil cooler pipe than strip the box and check the ratios Peter! #-o
