Help chosing car!

Hi all! This is my first post on the forum though i've been a lurker on the mail list for a few years now. Used to have a MK2 NA MR2 which i had loads of problems with (engine blew up and had to be replaced!). I'm looking at buying a turbo now and i've seen the following advert on Auto Trader not too far away from me which caught my attention:

1994 L Reg TOYOTA MR2 2.0 GTS Twin Entry Turbo Revision 3
2 Doors, Manual 5 speed, Coupe, Petrol, 60,000 miles, Metallic Goodwood Green. Power Steering, Central Locking, Electric Windows, Electric Mirrors, Alloy Wheels, Twin Stainles Steel Exhaust, Rear Spoiler, Factory Fitted Sports Seats, HKS Induction Kit, Blitz Dump Valve, Radio Cassette With CD Player Air Con, Import, With Toad Alarm, £3,995 ono.

Looking at other ads this seems pretty damn cheap for that model and spec! I'm planning on going over tomorrow to take a look, but i just thought i'd ask here and see if anyone has any comments!

£3995 for a rev3 is cheap!

Just cos you get the occasional person selling their's dirt cheap, doesn't set the price!

I paid over double that for my 94 rev3 and am as happy as larry. I'd pay that much again for a car in such good condition no probs.

Well, we've been over this topic a millon times already over the past few weeks, suffix to say that prices are dropping rapidly so take a good look round.

You will find lots of cars out there for cheaper money now. Take your time, search around, drive a load and pick one you like.

Yeah, could well be. Saw the "GT" part and assumed it was a turbo. From looking at the vents it looks like a UK car.

Still bloody lovely though, and most "men in the street" always value UK cars higher than Imports for whatever reason.....

Back in April time, the average price for a rev3 tubby in good condition was around £6.5k

If anybody paid 6.5K for a rev3 then they have money to burn.

Look around, look at all the avenues for buying MR2's - prices for the MK2 have crashed, prices for the MK1's are on the up as "classic cars".

thats a decent price for a rev3 turbo nowadays, they start at 3.5k for hardtops and can go up to anything ridiculous like 8k when on dealer forecourts.

i would check it out and if it looks good and runs well, snap it up mate..... just dont crash it

That one is definately an N/A and is definately an import. Bloody cheap though and looks like a good buy.

Just an update on the car i mentioned at the start of the thread - i went over to see it today, and it was an absolute shed

The car was at a place called Keighley Auto Centre in North Yorkshire. They had about 4 or 5 MR2s, mostly turbos. They all looked pretty crap to me to be honest. The only decent things they seemed to have were one or two very good condition 1995 Nissan Skylines.

The car was Goodwood green which i've now determined is not the colour for me - i'm after a black one.

I think now i'm going to consider looking at getting one imported. Just in case anyone is thinking of selling, i'm after a Black MR2 GT-Turbo T-Bar Rev 3 (is this what most people are after ).

Probably a wise move.

I paid £4 for a 1994 gts virtually identical in spec to the one you saw. I bought it at night (doh!) and didn't get any AA or mechanical check (double doh!) and by the time I'd got it home it was already leaving a trail of oil smoke.

In fairness though (and to regain a scrap of self dignity on here), the body was A1, so I'm looking at spending about another £1k on the engine to get a truely top notch car!

If you don't want the hassle of repairs, or want to run with a lower-end model for a while then you'll have to pay the premuim to a decent importer or someone trustworthy seller, unless you get lucky and a model comes up near you where the seller doens't understand its value properly.

Don't forget not all newly imported cars are "mint" though - I saw some real dogs from importers who didn't even know what Rev the car was. And a high price tag doesn't always mean high quality.

Tbh mate, I'd pay £4 for a '2 that had a trail of smoke!!!

Nothing new unfortunately, the bulk of their stock is very poor

Out of interest where are they keeping the sportscar stock at the moment? When I went past on Friday night all they seemed to have on display on the forcourt was 4wd stuff.

Erm - i don't know the area well, but did pass the 4WD forecourt on the way home, the rest of the stuff is now off the main road, just near the level crossing, there's a place that sells caravans on the right and an industrial area. Go right just before the caravan place and follow your nose!
