rev3 problems

Post by MARKTURBO21 »

hi i have a rev3 turbo and its only firing on two cylinders

the person i bought it from is a mechanic he had a look he said to try changing the leads and if that doesn't sort it he will have a further look

do you think it could be the leads or is it more likely to be a bigger problem

also where is the cheapest place to get some rev3 leads i would prefer standard ones

or if anyone has a good second hand set in working order pm me or email me at

toyota leads are pretty good and not that expensive in comparison to the aftermarket types which aren't any better.

The leads might cure the problem but likely the dizzy cap will be needing some attention too

i have finally changed the leads and its still the same
the plugs have been changed aswell

does anyone have any ideas what it could be

or if there is any good mechanics in the essex area who knows about these engines it would be a great help

4 things can be causing this no air, no spark, no fuel or no compression.

turning the engine over with a plug out of a cylinder which is not firing, but still attached to the lead to see if you have a spark
Get a compression gauge and test compression over all 4 cylinders one at a time, they should be very close.
Turn over engine without a plug in and you should see, smell and feel fuel (although this won't tell you if it's the right amount of fuel).
The chances of you not getting air in are slim, so not worth checking at this point.
If you are missing spark then check dizzy and rotor arm as you've done leads and plugs.
If you are missing fuel then could need injectors replaced as it's isolated to 2 cylinders. (2nd hand fuel rail should sort that for a few ££s's)
If you don't have compression then it's either the head leaking or piston rings worn, could be other causes, but these are the most common. this is a big job to sort either way, although skimming the head and throwing on a new gasket is a lot cheaper and easier than stipping and rebuilding the bottom end.
Hop this helps you.

if it was piston rings or compression would it make the car smoke or lose oil

as the car starts up fine no probs just sounds noisy when you rev it and has lost power

If it was piston rings then it would smoke, but not necessarily if it was the head. Have you had the timing checked as well, it may be retarded slightly, you could try loosening the dizzy cap and turning it slighlty each way to see if Idle improves, but remeber to mark it's original position.
How did you come to the conclusion that you're running on 2 cylinders ?

well the person i bought the car off came and had a look and pulled two of the ht leads off while the car was running and it didin't make any difference to the way it was running

the thing is the car doesn't idle rough or smoke or have any probs in starting

its just when you rev it or drive it, becomes noisey and lost its power

if i wanted to check the compression can you just get a tool from a local car shop

i don't know how to do much on cars is it a complicated job or fairly simple

are there any mechanics on here who would be willing to take on the job of trying to sort my car obviously i will pay money i just don't wanna get messed about by a local garage

need someone who knows what they are doing with mr2 turbo engines [-o<

You can pic up a compression tester from halfords and the likes, but it'd be cheaper getting a local garage to do it than buy one. It's very easy to check the compression, just take out a spark plug and replace it with the compression gauge, then turn over the engine manually (could also turn over by starting the car normally but then it's not so accurate, but for your purposes this could be ok just need to note the peak pressure as the needle bounces up and down) but as I say it's probably easier to take it to a local garage they may be able to tell you if it's getting fuel as well.
Have you confirmed there is a spark on these cylinders yet ?
Could very easily be blocked or faulty injectors. Shame you're not up in sunny Scotland or I'd happily help you out .
