In-car tv screen and PS2 slimline

Hello,

Just fitted my t.v screen and PS2 (slimline) but have a problem with interference.

It appears to be caused by the power supply to the PS2 and is seen as lines on the screen and whining through the stereo (only when engine is on and/or power steering in operation).

The power supply I used first was a invertor that plugs into the cigarette lighter. 12V-240V-8.5V ish, no probs except it kills the battery quickly.

The I bought a invertor specially made for the PS2 (slimline) in-car, it plugs into the cigarette lighter. 12V-8.5v ish, problems begin.

I have added a extra cig lighter to the car to keep my excisting one free and hoped to eleviate the problem but to no avail.

Can anyone suggest a solution as I am a little stumped by this one?

Are there any kind of supression items for sale on the market or am I just gonna have to use the 240V invetor and keep my engine running all the time ??

I may be wrong but could it be interfearance within the screen, not the ps?
try running the ps off your mains electricity with an extension lead, and then see if you still get the interfearance. If it is off the screen, not the ps, try connecting directly the battery to get rid of any ground loops and see if this helps.

I have hads so many problems with interfearance, i bought screened directional phons, not cheap!, a dual battery set up. still not completely gone. All my ice, including screen etc, is now linked to second battery, this has reduced it a lot but still not gone. I have been told to try earthing the power steering, and fuel pump directly to the battery, cant say if this will help yet as not tried it!!

I have tried using the 240v invertor I bought originally and there is absolutly no interference at all when using that, however like I said in my original post it kills the battery pretty quick.

It seems that the problem only occurs when I use the adaptor made for the PS2 slimeline.

Do you mean direct link the screen or PS2 co`s to the battery?

I have direct linked the PS2 and still have interference.

As you say it is a problem with the second invertor. May be best installing a second battery just for that then? This way you can use it untill it dies, with no worries of your car not starting after!

I tried ground loop isolators in mine, but made no difference. This was only for audio though. Perhaps try asking at maplins/ring around a few ICE shops?

The PS2 needs grounding.

I had exactly the same problems when I did *coughcough* the worlds first Xbox-linux in car install ... interference through the screen and audio whining.

Basically the console isn't earthed well enough through the power supply. You need to ground the console directly from a good earth source (the Xbox has a metal shield all the way around the inside, i'd guess the PS2 will have something similar, or a good solid earth strip on the PCB). Take a feed from there to clean part of the car body. I bet you that fixes it.

Its funny you should say that but I was looking at it the other day and there is a screw hole in the back that would be ideal for this.

i'm about to do a ps2 install in my car (with original PS2 and inverter) - i've bought all the necessary parts to hardwire it all in - in line fuse, connections, switch and cable - will go in once i have made up a custom bracket.

i'm thinking about doing a custom housing under the glovebox as well... i was planning on putting the invertor around there as well so hopefully won;t have too many problems with invertor?.. i've tried with the invertor on the ciggy lighter and it seemed to work ok - no lines/interference..
