Drilling into a bolt! help!

Post by Paul R »

Hi,

One of the engine mount bolts was sheared off when I dropped my engine and I've just been trying to get it out tonight with a set of stud extractors.

Now I need to drill a hole in the center of the bolt. The problem being that I've gone through 3 drill bits to drill a hole 4mm deep!! arrghh!! What do toyota make these things out of???

Is there a drill bit that will drill into these bolts?

Paul.

Right,I had the same problem when one of my wheel nuts rounded off and had to drill down through the middle of the stud. What you need are Cobalt drill bits.Start with a small bit and then work your way up to a bigger size, and when drilling let the drill do the work don't force it,take your time, ideally get a variable speed drill so that you can start off slowly.
The cobalt bits cost me around £3 upto £20 for a bit the same size as a wheel stud, lol, did the job like a hot knife through butter :D
Watch out OZ here I come !!

paul if you dont manage to get it out with the extractor, and you have access to or know someone with a mig welder, place a large nut over the top of the snapped off bolt and weld through the nut onto the stud. The heat from the weld will shift it and then just undo the nut to extract the stud...

Cool. I'm going to pick up a set of cobalt drill bits tonight after work. Machinemart do a 25 piece set for 20 quid......hopefully that will do the job!
