New to Mr2

Post by Mista Weava »

Girl friend has just aqquired a nice white k-reg UK mr2 t-bar.

it has a fsh and 95 k on it.

really interested to find out what these push power/torque as std and what the future for modifications is! ;)

cheers,

ok, i have found out that the car produces 160bhp and 140 lb/ft torque as std.

but what about upgrades, exhaust and chip would be a good start as it has a cone filter of sorts on there?

cheers!

Welcome to the both of ya! 8)

You'll need some IMOC stickers for it then no doubt? PM me! lol :D

On NAs, people seem to like putting a filter and a zorst on first. A good place to go would be Dan @ Dzdesign. Or is it dcdesign? er, can't remember, but he does great deals on a Mongoose full Stainless steel exhaust and air filter. £300 odd quid If i remember correctly.

There are lots of zorst and filters to choose from. Apexi come up top trumps usually, as they have the best filtration. Exhaust is personal preference. I think there's a few for sale in the for sale section.

Ultimately, you'll want to the girlfriend away for a week and get it rogue systems to fit a turbo engine! lol

Hope that helps!

 @ the turbo conversion!

i am certainly not new to the modifying scene as i have an impreza wrx wagon with a host of mods and 1.5 bar boost! ;) i am keen to get back to some organic tuning though with the NA engine. the throttle response and flat torque curve that i had in my 205 gti a few years back is something i miss.

however the allure of rear drive calls me though and i feel the GF has made an excellent choice! ;) whos' car is this again?!?!

was thinking that as it has the filtration largely sorted i would then look to an exhaust system. not particuarly worried about the type of system, more concerned with getting the best one for performance ie: the one that flows the best.

i have always liked Hayward and scott stuff for quality.

i dunno what the deal is with remapping - any ideas?

ps - yhpm re stickers! :D

 1.5bar

remapping?

If you mean remapping the std system with the zorst and filter there's no need. You could reset the ECU by pulling out the fuses under the bonnet and engine lid that say 'ecu' 'ecu-b' or 'egi'. Think the affects are more profound on a turbo though.

Or do you mean remapping a unichip?

Personally, I'd lower it a tad, get some 16", get some anti roll bars, struts brace+ xbraces, sort out the handling. As you probably know, a good handling setup can have a setup of higher bhp. And they do handle lovely when its all done!!

As far as exhaust go, I'm afraid I'm a turbohead so don't know any NA exhausts. But I should think a short single exit is what you're after. If you had a turbo, I'd say a Buddy club sports exhaust. Maybe they do something similar for the NA, I dunno! Maybe even H&S could custom make you a zorst that is just like it? Though I don't think you can get away with a decat.

hope that helps! 8)

thanks Luke,

i was meaning remapping in terms of a more refined map of the std setup, but from what you say it sounds as though this is not possible.

i would be keen to replace the chip with an aftermarket version and set the cars fuelling and timing to suit a smoother power delivery and as a result probably be able to tweek a bit more power out of the unit.

regards a de-cat, i knw tame MOT testers if you knwo what i mean.

i will look into the availibility of aftermarket zorst systems and see what gives.

1.5 bar is rather fun in the scooby, i have fitted a hayward and scott full decat, front mounted intercooler, 550cc injectors, uprated fuel pump and reg, exedy clutch, yada yada.....lots of handling mods braces, drop linkks etc. lots of fun! :D

i have a friend who developed a system for remapping the std ecu and we have been able to reliabily go from 0.9 bar to 1.5 bar.

:thumright: Yep, they do some good stuff for the Scoob as well don't they?

They do a system for the Turbo, I'm fairly sure they also do one for the NA '2.

NA tuning is interesting - For mope BHP you usually end up robbing some low down torque and gaining top end power.

There was a Rev2 with 197bhp on a standard engine block, cams etc - it had exhaust, decat, intake and a Unichip fitted probably mapped at Millway, so that would be a way to go.

A simple upgrade though would be to run it on super unleaded and advance the timing a bit when doing some runs on a rolling road ..

cheers Ben and Vin.

i have the hayward and scott on the scoob - they are a very good company.

i would prefer to get some more torque from the mr2 really. obviously an increase in power would be fun, it needs to be driveable, rather than revving its boobs off to go anywhere!

i think running on SUL and some advance is agood plan! 8)

i gather there is throttle butterfly mechanism in the induction, i am lead to believe that it keeps one of the inlet valves shut off to help atomising fuel til about 5k rpm.

can anyone tell me if this is true and where possible provide a link with a diagram please?

took the car out the other day and enjoyed inducing some power oversteer on a wet corner! ;) tis fun car, me like....

Hello folks

I am the GF - I see BF got here first! Thanks for the tips. Now all I have to do is stop Weava spending money modding my car....and sending me the bills

Small turbos - they're not big and they're not clever!

I haven't had a chance to drive it yet or to really look at it owing to the fact that I work away during the week (and I only bought it at the w/e). Once I have more idea what I might want to know, I'll be back to quiz you guys.
