Headunit without a load on the internal amp, damaging..?

Post by Goto10 »

I remember reading that running an amp with no load on the outputs can be damaging to it. I use my current headunit from pre-outs only and the internal amp is not connected to anything, does the same rule apply to the internal amp or are they designed to 'see' no load when running from just the pre-outs..?

I've personally never had a problem with IC amps in things like car headunits...

The 'blow it up without a load' was typical of Discrete hifi-amps of the 60's - it's not really been an issue for the last 20 years as semiconductor technology has become a lot more robust.

Might be worth checking if you can switch off the internal amp, I have on my Alpine. Should give slightly better sound quality too!
