MK1.... ANY IDEA'S ANYONE ??

Post by Tony jinxy froude »

Hi all,
popped round Kev's (crazylegs) yesterday to finish a few things on his everyday mk1 & while i was there we tried to start up his old mk1 which has not been started for around 6 months, it needed a jump start as the battery is knackered, it took quite a few attempts to get it started and running but it appears to be missing on two cylinders 3 & 4, although there is a spark to both cylinders and we have checked the plugs, they all appear to be well sooted except for number 3 plug, we also took the rocker covers off and checked the valves for free movement and all was ok, we also changed the leads as the old ones were causing a spark to jump accross the terminals at the coil when we pulled the HT leads from either 3 & 4 plugs , we also swapped over the two plugs that was firing on 1 & 2 cylinders and put them in 3 & 4, and it still seems to be missing on 3 & 4, could this be a case of stuck rings in 3 & 4 bores ? we havnt done a compression test yet but will next time im there, if it is stuck rings is there a cure ? and can anyone else think of something we have missed ? BTW the car was running perfect before the long lay up, cheers, Jinxy

Drop some oil or release fluid down the plug holes and get it cranking over (perhaps without an HT lead?) You can always drop the oil soon after if you use release fluid (it'll be the same as the engine flush stuff).

sounds like the injectors on 3 and 4 arent doing their job, possibly gummed up from standing, try swapping them for others to see if it sorts it tony...other than that the compression test is all i can suggest.

sounds like injectors to me, my Mk1 stands for long periods and the way I get around this problem is red X injector cleaner / lube, squirt a bit into the tank every 3rd or 4th fill up.

I've got a set of working 215cc (Ish) Mk1 injectors if you want to try them.
