3S-GE Engine removal guide??

Post by Urban »

Does anyone know of a guide I can print out that shows how to remove and replace the engine in my Mk2 Rev1 NA??

I've got a new engine arriving this week and need to do the swap myself as most garages don't seem willing to do the work!

One of the main things i need to know (being new to MR2s) is whether the engine should be lifted out of the car? Or if the car should be lifted over a dropped engine?

Any help/advice will be much appreciated...

Thanks

Sounds like you are further than me in this conversion, i need to locate an engine first.
Go here http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/kb.php?mode=article&k=55

Where did you locate your donar engine / car clip then?

Well i'm simply swapping my current 3S-GE for a newer low mileage 3S-GE... Wasn't brave enough to attempt the turbo conversion yet!

Someone was selling the engine on these forums, its being collected today so the swap will happen next weekend.

I had already seen the link you posted, I guess it can't be too difficult to do the swap 8)

The engine has to come out underneath. Drop the whole unit in one.

Engine swap

Post by Lewis Jay »

Hello Urban,

I am in the process of doing this now, should be putting the engine back in, in the next couple of weekends.

I would advise doing the cambelt on the new engine, if you think it needs doing do the clutch too. It will save alot of hassle in the future.

If you need any advice feel free to PM me mate.

Cheers, Lewis.

I really am a novice with the MR2, and most engine work if i'm honest.

How much work/cost would be involved with both of the above? And is it something I should attempt having no clue about either the cam belt or clutch?!

I'm in the process of stripping the old engine to a bare minimum today so that its easier to remove.

Engine swap

Hello mate,

The cambelt is fairly easy to do once you get the pulley off, without the right tools this is a pain. Just get some advise on correct timing, lots of post about it on here. It would cost you roughly £80 for cambelt parts.

The clutch should be easy as the engine and bearbox will be split and you will have to swap it anyway when put the new engine in. Roughly £100 for clutch parts.

You will need access to lots of tools!

Cheers, Lewis.

This is the easiest way of getting an engine out from under a 2. Its tried and tested by me a few times now :D

Is it necessary or easier to have the engine and gearbox split?

The new engine is arriving with a gearbox attached and (as you've probably guessed already) I've never took and engine/box apart so don't know how easily they would go back together!

You need to speak to the person you got the stuff from, if they say the clutch was o.k and the timing belt was done recently then leave them and just do a straight swap.

If not the the gearbox comes off pretty easy only a few bolts.

Cheers, Lewis.
