Remote engine start? How to add to my alarm system?

Post by skytek »

Hey guys,

I havea clifford alarm system and the key fob has the buttons for remote start and remote lights but neither are installed. How do I get these features added to my system? It is a case of getting extra hardware fitted? Where do I go for this and any ideas how much?

I'm getting tired of getting in the car in the freezing cold and having to defrost the windows. I sometimes start the car and then go back in and shave for 5 mins but I worry someone may open the gates anf nick the car, unlikely in my street but still a risk.

Thanks!

I know you probably don't want to get rid of your alarm but Clifford have been riding on their name for years - imho, they are way overpriced.

There are other great alarms with remote start for way less than a Clifford.

Speak to Dan at http://www.dcdezign.com - I and a few friends have the LEA 826 that he sells. think it's £150.

Good things aren't cheap, and cheap things aren't good. Naturally, I really rate the Clifford kit! :D None of us can afford to diddle around with car security, so you pays yer money and you takes your chances.

Now...back to the original question. I had the Clifford Intellistart fitted to the Clifford 600 system on my old Rev 2, and it was just a case of buying it and waiting for the installer to pop round and fit it to the car/system. Very nice, very handy, and very painless.

i got the lea 826, great alarm, has features the same as a 1k clifford or toad alarm........
never had problems and i honestly cant see how any other alarm could be better (unless you spend a ton on one).........
some insurence companies require a cat 1/2 alarm or even that it has to be a toad of clifford to get insured, soon as you get remote start your insurence would be void as tecnically remote starts are illegal.......(mr plod certainly wouldnt be pleased)....

Hi mate,

As Jim states, a remote start invalidates the current cat 1 level of your alarm - so you need to consider the insurance cost that may be incurred.

Otherwise head on over to your local clifford authrised dealer and they can likely price it all out for you :)

mate, with your insurence company, have they asked that your alarm has to be a cat 1/2 etc etc.........
if all they asked was
"does your car have an alarm" and you put yes, youll be fine.......

i was never asked with elephant if my alarm was cat/1/2/3 or anything.........

I bought my policy with elephant online and ticked the box for yes i have an alarm fitted, so no reference to whether it was cat 1 or not.

Just be careful that you don't narrow your insurance choices down too much as many companies will require the cat 1 cover, although Elephant may not specifiy you don't want to get stuck with just them if others won't cover you. :)

Hi i have to go along with rwilson_ie i think clifford are over-rated and over priced i went to clifford for a cat1 with automatic c/l, to be able to shut the windows with a touch of a button and interior sensors and warn away system i nearly had a heart attack when i got the price i can not remember the correct price but is was about £800, then i phoned a alrm company that my mate had a alarm done by for his BMW and they quoted £400 inc fitting for a toad alarm and it is just as good

thanks rant over

I agree with everyones points !

* Clifford are good - not denying that.

* imo, I think they're overpriced and there are other alternatives.

* Just be aware of insurance implications.

According to a friend and other forums it is legal to have remote start its just illegal to have your car running on the road without someone with it. so in theory you can use the alarm off the road but as soon as you have it running on the road your car is illegal.but your insurance company shoudnt care if its on your drive, one more point dont get your car stolen when you remote start it your insurance company will laugh loudly at you and put the phone down!

Another case of the IMOC 'recurring thread' syndrome here, but personally, I'd rather trust my car's security to an £800 system than some budget wikkid system.
Some of my friends are ex-car theives (yes, yes; they've done their time), and they all say that the Clifford systems gave them the most trouble...if they managed to take the car at all.
