Newbie- new turbo owner general queries

Post by Shings »

Hi All...

I am new to MR2's and Jap cars- having cut my performance car teeth with the dark side- Fords with RS badges LOL.

I am just about to purchase an MR2 off a friend, he doesn't really know much about em although its his second and its cheap enough for me to have a bit of fun in, maybe even get hooked on LOL.
I am completly at a loss when it comes to these cars - as it doesn't have RS, cosworth or Ford stamped on it- sorry for being so blinkered.

Got a couple of queries regarding the cars in general- would you guys be so kind as to help?

Its black and is a J plate car with 16's, Air con, cloth, manual, power steering and leccy windows- how do I know what Revision this is and what are the plus's and minus's of such a car?

Its currently running 0.4 bar- what sort of power is this? It has a bleed valve, I am able to get the fueling checked accuretly but what are these cars able to run boost wise on standard management and fueling as I belive this is standard oe stuff.
How would I tell anyway?

What sort of mileage are these engines good for- it is showing 107km's I believe.

What sort of BHP is the standard Box/diff good for?

Do they all come with adjustable tca's on the rear and if so how much are replacements as I think one of them is worn and no longer adjustable.

How easy is it to change the clutch as the pedal is very high ( is that normal?) what sort of money are we looking at if I pay for someone to do it?

Thanks for reading and I am sorry if these topics have been covered before in depth- just after some quick fixes to finalise making the decision on buying the car.

Cheers

1989-1991 - Revision 1
1992-1993 - Revision 2
1993-1995 - Revision 3
1995-1997 - Revision 4
1998+ Revision 5

0.4 bar is around 6 PSI which a little on the low side.

Rev 1/2 cars run circa 9-10 PSI with a fuel cut circa 11 PSI
Rev 3+ cars run circa 13 PSI with a fuel cut circa 18 PSI

Hope this helps a bit :)

Cool we're getting somewhere- Fuel cut... If I wind the boost up to say a 1bar (14.7) I take it at full boost it will cut the fuel and I'll head butt the windscreen.

Now if I dont- is it fair to assume that its been chipped or the boost cuts been removed??? If so how will I find out whats been done to it?

on a rev 1 it will cut the fuel once boost hits 11 PSI, 18 PSI on a rev 3

Fuel cut defenders by the likes of HKS/Fensport etc will get rid of the fuel cut, they cost about £70 and are spliced in to the ECU.

some A/M ECU's also get rid of the standard fuel cut.

best thing to do is get a decent boost gauge first and see what you are boosting to etc.

Which is way too expensive for what you get (essentially one potentiometer, costing less than £1). If you are even the slightest bit handy with a soldering iron (or you have a friend who is), build yourself one of these: http://toymr2.tripod.com/fcd.html

I ordered the needed parts online at Conrad, and it took me and a friend 15 minutes to assemble, plus 15 minutes to splice into the pressure sensor wiring, plus 30 minutes to make a few test runs and set it properly. Total cost: about £5. If you want, I can give you the part numbers for the casing, potmeter etc.

But I do agree: make sure you have a proper boost gauge before changing boost pressure.

0.4bar is WAY to low mate, the cars actually running in safety mod at this level and is a good 30-40bhp down on a stock car.........
clearly theres something wrong here.....
i personally woulndt touch the car unless this was sorted before i nought the car.......it could be any number of things, split pipes, head gaskets, turbo dying........

however in this freezing whether the tvsv doesnt infact low the boost by around 3psi for safety (in outside temps are 5degrees or below), this only happens on rev1/2s...which will rob you off power....

if hes a bleed valve and is still only running 0.4bar
these cars are good for 15psi which is around 1bar, so you can imagine how much down on power this car is, as 1 psi equates to around 7-10bhp!

keep the questions coming......

oh, sotck 0-60 5.7 (however obviously hes not running stock boost so it wont feel like this until sorted)
