Boo! my MK1 is a write-off because of a minor prang??!

Post by nickbond »

What shall I do? I had a very low impact with a bollard on the drivers side door which has removed the trim, dented the door and sill of my otherwise lovely Mk1! Yes very annoying! The body shop say it will be an insurance write-off cos new doors and sills aren't available and because the car was only worth about £1200 anyway. It seems such as pity. As you can see from the photo, the damage doesnt look too bad and it's still perfectly driveable obviously. I'm gutted. I loose my no-claims bonus and my car, because I inadvertantly steered into an "invisible" bollard. Humpf

Don't put it through the insurance just keep it or scrap it. Feck the no claims bonus just leave the car as it is. If you can, get your mits on a door at a scrappy. Same goes for the sill.

There is an MR2 Mk1 in a scrap yard in Strathaven right now!

Plenty doors at scrappies or on ebay. Sills are available too ( have a look at the Mk1 club site for a link ) or Mk3 Escort 2 door sill apparently can be made to fit with a little work.

Yeah, I am so loathed to go thru insurance cos you end up paying for it anyway in your next premium. I could keep but I'd still have to get work done on the sill which I think was the main issue, and I cant afford to. What would it go for as scrap/spares dya think? Cheers for the advice..

Hard to tell from the pic, but it looks like its the side skirt thats smashed, you can easy pick them up on ebay and as MartG says doors as well. Don't claim on your insurance, just get the bits 2nd hand and get it repaired shouldn't cost much at all.

dont go through the insurance.its not a right off just uneconomic to repair. the door, side skirt and trim etc are all readily available second hand.have a word with paul woods about a new sill.he will give you a realistic price and probably do it for you if you are prepared to travel a bit. catch up with him, mk1turbo, or click on the twobrutal site.if you want his email PM me.you will get her back on the road for less than your premium increase would be if you claimed.

Here's a better photo of the side damage - you can see it defo needs the sill straightening out, the door fixing, and the skirts replacing. I can't afford this right now so, I might sell cheap it to someone who can.

Sill looks like it could be pulled out ( drill hole, screw in self tapper and use it to pull the dent out ). Door doesn't look too bad, just a question of which is cheapest - knock the dent out and quick blow over of paint or buy a 2nd hand door and paint to match.

No skirts listed on ebay at the moment, but there are some Mk1 'breaking for spares' where you may get some

thanks for that martG. The general consensus seems to be - get it fixed! I will look into getting second hand door etc. If it get's too time consuming, I'll be back here next week to flog it! Cheers for all the info. Nick

Pull the sil out, second-hand door at worst and another skirt. Job done. There is no way that car should end up scrapped for that small amount of damage. What a crazy world we live in, eh?

Nick, whichever garage you took it to obviously didn't want to do the work.

The sill, if you want to repair it - it should hide with a new sideskirt (always on ebay, I may have a pair of white ones if you want them? [took the whole mk1b kit off when fitting my eurosport kit, Tom got my front splitters, but the side skirts and triangles are still there], price of postage only) - is easy to fix... either new one from Mr T, or the cheap route of a mk3/4 Escort sill, again, hidden by the sideskirt. Can't see that work costing more than a hundred quid or so, tbh.

The door is a pretty trivial amount of work for a decent bodyshop; pull the biggest part of the dent out, rub and level with filler, then respray the door. Again, no more than 200 quid at the outside (I had the rear 3/4 panel on my Supra resprayed for 130 quid after some berk drove down the side of my car at a junction, and it's about 3-4 times the size of that area!).

Chin up! :D

My advice would be to get it road legal and do a few trackdays in the car.

Thrash the hell out of it on a track! i.e. do something you wouldn't have done before the prang.

(you can drive as hard as you like with a car that is already dented!)

My blue mk1b is probably in its final year (getting rusty) and I intend to do some mad trackdays next year.

The same thing happened to one of ours, Joannes got hit head on but at reasonably slow speed. Was an insurance write off. We got £2000 insurance for the car, bought it back from them for £300, stuck it in the body shop, got brand new Toyota wing, inner metal bumper, bought from Ebay front plastic bumper, lower vallence, got the bodyshop to fit everything and gave it a full respray. Cost £700 for the work and about £400 in parts. She scored almost a grand from the insurance company which we used for a good holiday in the Caribbean. The cars a CAT 'C' but we dont plan on selling her so its not a problem. Also when the premium came through to re-insure the car it was less then the previous year before she had the accident. Good luck

The car looks very clean, definitely don't scrap it.

I've got the parts kicking about if you need them v. cheap (I've got loads of doors and skirts!), they'd just need spraying.
