Newbie ! Is this car worth over book price?

Post by nogginthenog »

Hi all
I have come here asking for your advice: apologies if this is the wrong forum.
A friend of mine has a White N reg 1996 Mk 2 MR2. It is his pride and joy, it is only used as a dry/weekend car, so it has covered less than 13000 miles.
It has been garaged from new (by him) and is absolutely mint.
He is now emigrating, and is not allowed to import his car, or he would take it with him!
I have done a quick valuation for him at www.autotrader.co.uk, but I suspect that the enthusiasts here may put a higher value on the car- especially with the low mileage and pampering that the car has received.
Further details:
MR2 Mk2 GT, White, <13k miles, Toyota CD player, fixed hardtop, factory SunRoof, full Toyota dealer service history.

So:

is it unrealistic to expect much more than book price? Or are these cars sought after and attract a premium?

Thanks for any advice

Neil

Has your friend mentioned a price yet? It'd be interesting to see what he's after for the car.
Mk2 NA Rev1 -*- Mk2 Turbo Rev2 -*- Mk1 NA -*- Mk2 Turbo Rev 3 = all gone!

Nige; he hasn't mentioned a price yet.
He only found out he wouldn't be able to take his car abroad with him last night, so it's all early days; He will no doubt get a few mags and start looking at prices.
However he will need to sell the car fairly quickly, so I offered to put out feelers on his behalf.
For me, I think the car is worth what someone is prepared to pay for it- the trick is matching buyer and seller. If it was mine I think I'd try a punt on ebay, but it ain't, so it's up to him.
Thanks

Hi Neil,

That was pretty much the spec I was looking for when I bought mine, although mine is a '98. Mine too was v low mileage - 19k, now approaching 24k, FTSH, mine's an NA, sunroof..... and blue, and of course mint inside and out. Not sure how desirable white is - probably quite desirable on this car?? And not having removable roof panels takes the price down a bit.

Don't mind telling you mine cost £8,200 down from £9k from Toyota dealer - I think I got a good deal there. Therefore I would estimate a private sale of ..... hmmmmm .... £6,500 up to 7k at the very most? If it were me, I'd put it on for £6995, as you'll be knocked down a bit of course. You'd never get that price on ebay - on autotrader you might though

I believe cars like this go for a premium, and may take a little time to find the right buyer....

That's what I would pay, given age, Rev4, and low mileage, great condition etc.

Hope that helps,

Leon

One other thing, I think autotrader is the way to go. I've sold 2 cars on it and got amazing prices, far more than I should have but sshhhhhhhh!!!!

Not so sure about ebay for cars :?

Thanks Leeroy, I will be getting in touch today to find out what he wants to do: I think autotrader with an asking price of £7k is the way to go.
