Alternator problem...

Post by liberty »

I posted this originally on MR2OC, but feel that if I post it here, it would be read by more people! ;)

Car originally went in for lowering springs & find out why my battery was draining within a couple of days! Sometimes less!!! ](*,)

Anyway, this was 2 weeks ago! In the mean time I've had new droplinks fitted (as the old ones were very worn) and a new alternator to be fitted as apparently the drain was the alternator diodes having been blown up.

Just phoned him up as not heard anything, anyway he said new alternator arrived okay and it has the right connector, but he is having trouble getting the old alternator out. He said that due to my exhaust and other brackets underneath the car, it won't come out the bottom unless he pulls the exhaust apart and even then he said it would be a squeeze getting it out between the engine (said he replaced one on a mark 2 a few months ago which came out via the bottom). So he said he's going to have to get it out from the top (removing alarm siren etc).

His worry was that the alternator is covered in oil (he thinks that's why it has f*cked up). He said it's running down the bulk head, but hopes it's just the cam cover seeping oil, not the actual bulk head.

Someone shed some more light on this for me? Do our cars leak much oil from the cam cover? Why would oil be on the alternator?

Thanks - I'm a bit worried now. FFS
