Right hello,
this has not made me a happy person
there i am loveing my sc not wanting the one car i have really fallen inlove and not want to get rid of and it gets taken out of my hands
i phone up the insurance the yesterday (i am with dorset) and ask about making my car so i can just use it at weekends - they say i have to be over 30 for that
so i ask adrian flux they say they will not do that on a import
okay fair nuff i will have to carry on using it everyday
i ask adrian flux for a price on insurance they come back and say as it is a very limted car not many insurance companies recognisie it
they offer me a quote for £1792 with 650 excess on a e reg car then said how does that sound???? i put the phone down i pay 780 at the moment
i phone up dorest how much is my renewal going ot be?
as you know dorset have become a bin changing insurance compaines or somthing they quote me £1982 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! from 780????? they give the same exscuse as adrian flux and that i am only 22
phone the mk1 club insurance won't insure me because i am not 23 or 24 cannot remember which
phone loads of compaines no one recognises the car
phone adrian flux and dorset get a quote on a st205 GT4 and rev 3 mk2 turbo both come out at 800 full comp???? how does thta work?
so there is no way i am paying 1900 to insure an e reg car (sorry steveK) but i just cannot justify it when i can get a gt4 or mk2 for 800
so any help would be great do you know of insurence companies that would insure the sc for my age 22 with 3 years ncb touch wood no points
what would you get?would not mind having somthing different to a mr2 as i have had 4 and i have a 5th na mk1 in my garage which i will keep
what other cars would you recommend
what are the actuall specs of a st205 gt4 and how easy to get that little it more power from it?
any one want a very very very clean and well looked after mk1 sc(on show at NEC hard top manual windows) i really do not want this car to go but i suppose it has to
steve you could have it as a runaround?

sorry for the long post you know what i went ot get the car now this happens at least i have had my fun in one and i will get another one
or of you know of any better insuranse please let me know

Well that rules out the first option in the poll.

I said go for the MK2. I just couldnt put up with a celica personally. Plus you'll still have a MR2. Plus the next step up is a Supra not celica.

Thats my own view. Not saying the celica is bad or anything. Just not my cup of tea.

what a bummer! its definatley not worth paying £1900 (especially if you've been paying £800 for it!!!)- unless you can afford it!

im insured with CIS and they are quite good- i expected Adrian Flux to be quite good really! Main reason im with CIS is that they do insurance for any driver any age- not many do that!

changing cars from an MR2 is always going to be hard. theres not alot out there that you can easily evolve to!

this is just a thought: these toyota ferrari owners register their cars as kit cars and hence pay very little on insurance even though it should be more than a normal MR2.... does anyone know how they go about this? do you have to change a % of the car from original state. You could say that ur MR2 is a replica of some sort of ferrari and class it as a kit car!

Is it modified at all Pete?

If not Liverpool Victoria might be worth a try. They are no longer insuring modded cars but apparently still do standard imports.

If it is modded try Footman James - but also I am sure Tesco still do insurance on it and it's worth a try.

Dorset are havin' a larf, £1900 on a car worth £3-4K??

It all depends on how much you enjoy ownership of the car. I've paid silly prices for insurance in the past, purely because I was madly in love with the car and thus would pay (almost) anything to drive it.

A decision like this has only got to come from yourself, as then it will be the right decision for you. None of us here know your financial situation so it's quite hard to suggest "buy this" or "buy that". :)

Maybe it's worth bringing back the discussion on an IMOC-UK insurance scheme again for situations like this?
Mk2 NA Rev1 -*- Mk2 Turbo Rev2 -*- Mk1 NA -*- Mk2 Turbo Rev 3 = all gone!

Bah, you can't compare the look of the ST202 to the ST205... its completely different looking beast with the open intake and big rear spoiler.

I wouldnt say step up, more of a step sideways. Each car has it's merrits.

Hi pete. Sorry about the news. All i can say is I'm a fellow young mk1 driver and have equal trouble when trying to insure.. I had one quote of £9000 for a e-reg N.A worth £1000... Rediculous, but it is my first car.
Remember that prob about 90% of the members of imoc are mk2 owners so no doubt the votes are a little bias.
No im not bringing up a mk1 vs mk2 debate but they are very different cars and so if you love a mk1 it doesnt necessarily mean you'll like a mk2.

Well heres my advice on ways you may be able to reduce your quote:
1. declare some older drivers with full NCB as named drivers on the policy: I declared both my parents and a step parent (all over 50 with full NCB) and saved £200!
2. remove ALL your mods so you dont have to declare them. you can live with a standard steeering wheel and exhaust for a bit? I think insurers are of the silly opinion that if you put a new steering wheel on your car then for sure you are a road raging boy racer with no intention of obeying any road laws!!!! worth a try.
3. Im sure you have done but try every insurer you can find asking them if they can beat your previous price of £780. i dont know, but some may have policies of guaranteeing to beat previous quotes and if you can prove with your reciept that you paid £780 then its worth a shot. Im with elephant.co.uk and they were by far the cheapest for me, but i dont know if they take imports. Asda do car insurance and i bet they will try and price match so give them a go. After all they are "never beaten on price!"

I havent voted on the poll because I wouldnt know what to do. Good luck with it whatever you have to do. Jon.

p.s. I have a frined of your age with import traders insurance and he pays something like £1900 for that.....and hes allowed to drive 600HP sklylines etc.... there must be someone out there who will cover you for less!!!!!!

I'd reccomend you drive both the mk2 Turbo and the GT4.

They're two totally different beasts, even thought they share quite a few similarties.

The ST205 is 245/255bhp, so the same kind of power as a standard rev3 mk2 Turbo. The mk2 Turbo is going to be fractionally quicker and the more nimble, but the GT4 is absolutely planted on the road.

The GT4 is going to be the more practical every day car. If you can call it that. But no matter which one you go for, at your age they are going to be expensive to insure. Can you handle paying that 800 quid and 500-or so excess?

Hi Pete,

what a nightmare, i am very surprised by this. Have you tried AON as they seem to offer a pretty good deal and do a classic insurance policy with limited mileage.
