This what you're looking for ?

Note the actual MOT tests have changed, but the general principle for Turbos is that pre July 95 cars get non cat tests.

Have a word with your MOT test station before though, and speak to someone at the VOSA agency - www.vosa.gov.uk, 0870 6060440 about this to confirm it - you can get the test station to give them a ring as well to confirm this.

I've written to them in the past and had a reply in writing confirming that my 93T didn't need a Cat test

i took that to my local MOT place.. and he told me the same what all the cars inc imports have to have the test...

i was confused by this and said that the cat test should not be required if you dont have the tubby on your database as it was never released in the UK? :?

He replied that there is no suck thing as a cat test and that its the emissions test which is what they will be doing...

I asked about decatting and he told me that it would fail the emmisions test without a doubt!..

Yes, its all moved over to BETS testing. Ring the VOSA and they'll confirm to you and him that a turbo, with an engine / body combination never sold in the UK, if its Pre-95 can have a non cat test. Just don't rub his nose in it ;)

My MOT was due back in October and went through all this then.

report him to the VOSA for being below the standard required to carry out the MOT test.

I have walked a tester through the book and you cannot find an SW20 chassis matched with the 3S- GTE engine. Its doesn't exist therefore according to the MOT regulations which your mechanic is legally obligated to follow he must check if the car is pre August 95, ie M plate or younger.

If it is then do the NON CAT test otherwise do the CAT test. If you threaten to report him I'll bet he will read the book and then be forced to eat humble pie

He will then of course fail your car on so many things it should be condemed

Options - report him and go somewhere else. Once less dipstick doing MOT's on our cars

I hear what your sayin Allan.. but he was actually being alright with me...

He said that there is no such thing as a cat test?? its the emmisions test that is compulsary.. and he said that he can garuntee that it would fail the emissions test without a cat in there..

BUT.. he has told me that there are ways and means to get round it.. and so not to worry about getting it decatted...

So all in all he was being very reasonable with me.. but he was just tellin me what was what so to speak..

its called a CAT test as the emission limits are so low you need a CAT to pass it. I don't care how nice he was being he is still talking out of his ar$e

If your car is a 94 rev 3 turbo then you are fine no problems no CAT required. I have a march 95 M plate turbo and trust me you cannot find our combination in the book.

Heck my old mk1 used to pass 1200ppm and 3.5% CO easily so I'd be shocked it a well running turbo failed the same limits
