Max Power MR2s

Post by Sidewinder »

I read the November edition of Max Power in the toilet at the weekend (no, I didn't buy a copy), and noticed the worryingly increasing number of MR2s appearing in the pages.

Now, maybe it's a bit of sheer car snobbery on my part, but at this rate, our fairly exclusive mid-engined beauties are at risk of becoming part of the Saxo/Nova/106 choice of car for the Burberry cap-wearing McDonalds carpark chav.

I await with dread this forum filling up with 'wikkid' text-style posts, more news reports about MR2s being smashed up by 17 year olds, and the Driving Experiences area full of tales of 'doing' other cars on the motorway.

It's probably due to the MR2 prices falling to a level where younger people can afford to buy them now, so I guess it's just an evolution of the user base.

Thank god this isn't happening in Cyprus. We have at most 500 Mr2!!!
The bad point is that the Mr2 owners are snobs!

Civics Integras and Subarus are all over the place.
When the Japs need parts for Celicas i bet they can find anything here!!

It happens!

This has been talked about for the past 2 years+

IIRC it was the time when Mitch Canny sold his Tubby for a Supe!

unfortunately its a fact we cant escape, but on the positive side, young muppets will trash the majority of them, make parts easier to get hold of, and good quality cars even rarer. For example finding a mint condition cosworth isnt easy anymore and the prices reflect this! the moral to this story being, keep your car in good order and you loose nothing.

very true unfortunatly. the value of mr2 turbo's has dropped so much that almost any chav can own a sub 6 second 0-60 car that can have the boost turned up relatively and cheaply. the good news is that it won't take long for them to be trashed.

when i was looking to replace my car last year its the main reason i didn't buy another mr2. i still like them though and will probably buy another in a couple of years time as a project car.

You're damn right, it will

I don't think we need to panic too much - these young whipper snapping chavs probably wouldn't be able to afford the insurance (if they can get any), let alone any mods. They'll own all the bad examples and you'll be able to notice them like you can already with their burberry caps!

Our lovely examples will remain the envy of many :D

Making a sweeping statement here, but it would seem that the majority of young boy racer drivers still live at home with mummy and daddy, so forking out £2000 a year on insurance is peanuts to them.
Mk2 NA Rev1 -*- Mk2 Turbo Rev2 -*- Mk1 NA -*- Mk2 Turbo Rev 3 = all gone!

I could be wrong but I would have thought that the car + £2k is well above what a young chav could afford?

Here's hoping

i agree there are more chavs owning mr2's
was one of the factors why I sold mine. a chav wouldnt have a nissan 200sx though, they would look at it and say "what the fook is that?"

I still love mr2's and want to get another one when I can afford 2 cars but looking for a house right now is a bit expensive :D

It is very sad, the worst bit is that most of the chavs won't have Insurance as they will have gone and bought a tubby then found no one will cover them. The police will (well maybe) register this and start pullying over every other MR2 they see which will be irritating as I don't want to be associated with the MCDonalds crew.

I just hope and pray that the ones that do get MR2s insure them 3rd party and then wrap them round trees ensuring they won't afford another for a few years.

Riiiiiiiiiiight ;)

There were 2 200sx's at Elvington when I last did a trackday there, both drivers were very 'Chav' in both their dress and their attitude.

No matter what car you have there will always be someone who also buys one but lacks taste, people with money don't instantly get class - you only have to look at famous rappers and rockers to see that... and basketball players.

It's been this way for some time now. As cars get older they get cheaper, they are powerful motors for the money, 2 seaters and the muppet brigade are buying them.

They are not exclusive anymore because they are affordable to the kids. Every performance car suffers the same fate eventually.

The Supra wasn't helped by the "Fast & Furious" movie...

Only thing to do is sell up and move up if it bothers you. Step up to a 350z, a 348 Ferrari, an S2000 etc for more exclusivity that we used to enjoy here 5 years ago.....

Not really any other answer, apart from enjoy your motors and ignore everyone else....

Have you got nothing better to do than worry about what type of person drives the MR2, if you haven't then you lead a very sad life.

At the end of the day every car is driven by a variety of different people.

My advice would be get on with your life or at least get a hobby!

You can jump on the evo bandwagon if you want, but I give it another year before it is engulfed totally by chavness.
