Twin Rear Lights Modification

Post by m4rcus »

Hi,

I keep seeing some nice 2's around here that have the twin brake light modification. I've searched here, but cannot find any info. I know I need a couple of capacitors but the rest I'll need some help on...

Cheers,

M

Diodes needed if: 1. You have ordered US Tail lights with NO rear fog lamp internal mirror light deflector (US don't have fog lamps on rear) 2. you want your UK fog switch to continue to work and not light up other filaments when using the RR Foglamp. :P

Cheers for that diagram, totally makes sense and I'll give it a go this weekend... only one more question... I've got a '95 UK N/A, will the fog lamp socket be able to accommodate the two filament bulbs, or do I need to get something from the scrappy?

UK cars will only have a single filament bulb holder, so off to a scrappy.. Look for any Toyota... Carina etc and get two twin filament bulb holders. Remember to leave a few inches of wires attached to splice in to your loom.

Peter
Looked at your diagram ( nothing wrong with it :) ) just thought it was a lot easier (and cheaper) to do it with 2 x 3a diodes. Thats how I did my MK1 lights :D

It is.

But i have had two MOT failures with MOT testers insisting the inners be fog lights only. (Something about "dual purpose"). I can't be bothered to argue with them so i wire so my two circuits so they can be simply disconnected and bypassed. Takes 1 min to do, and then reconnect after test.

That way, my customers will never have any problems.

Good point, I'll see what happens come MOT time next year, easy enough to add a switch if there's any problems.

I've fitted a switch into ours to disable the inner brakelights for MOT time. I don't have any problems with the sides/fogs in the same bulb, lots of sierras came out of the factory like that. I've spoken to a few MOT testers and they are all happy with sides and fogs in the same lamp, but not brakes and fogs, hence the switch.

Cool, just got two bulb holders from a scrappy for £2!

I had to use a blade to modifly the locating luggs, but that was easy. I have a further two questions though...
1. The reflector for the fog is in the way so the whole circle does not illuminate, is there a way around this?
2. Did you just drill some extra holes in the panel to get the wires through?

Cheers,

Hi M

Not sure i understand your questions. I've done a conversion tomight (fgs on a JDM car), no drilling necessary.....

Hi, guess they were a bit rushed...

1. If you look at the fog light the whole circle does not get lit up, inside there is part of the reflector cutting off part of the circle, if you light up your fog/brake you should see it...

2. You need some connecting wires from lhs to rhs, did I miss somewhere to take them out into the boot and across, hense the drilling question.

Cheers,

Marc
