Post by Cwill83247 »

Thanks for all your replys - quick question.

I need to get it to a garage will driving it do any more damage - the car hasn't overheated so assuming at moment head must be fine.

Or would you advise breaking down and getting in towed with my RAC cover...

Hi

Well I have had my rev 3 turbo for 3 months and it looks like,

well the headgasket has gone ( all symptons smokey, white gunk under filler cap)

Any idea's of Cost to get this done by a garage ? & how long should it take

Why do head gaskets go and what can i do to prevent it in the future -
(3rd mr2 and 3rd head gasket what am i doing)

Any recommended garages in south wales

Thanks

Totally gutted Chris

Ah a fellow Welsh man, and I can't belive that you also have a silver grey Turbo (Also look on deadhumancollectors profile  ). Where in south Wales are you from? I've only had work done around the Swansea/Carmarthen area and Im sorry to say that the only good one has been head hunted by Toyota in Carmarthen. Im sure you'll be able to find someone in the Cardiff area.

I do recommend you check these people out thoroughly though I've found most of the recommended around here can only talk a good job. Best of luck to you. :)

V-spec

If you live in Ponty have you tried V-spec performance? I know they're mainly Honda and Nissan tuners but they are highly recommended and they did tell me they can get parts for MR2's. Maybe they'll be able to work on yours or point you in the right direction at least.

Is that the coolant cap found in the engine, or the petrol cap?

Firstly the ehad gasket failure could be due to a number of reasons so the best thing to do is take it to a good garage and they will find out the cause. You have to find out what caused it, fix that, and then replace the head gasket or it will just fail agian and cost you a fortune. Sorry if Im stating the obvious but you would be suprised how many people just get the gasket replaced without looking for the cause.
Sure someone will recomend a gargage near you. Hope this helps :D

Sorry to hear about your problems. regarding a decent garage in the South Wales area - I was looking for a timing belt done on my turbo (didn't fancy messing around in s0d all space myself) and in the end I used D&J motors on the Colchester Avenue estate in cardiff, I think they charged about £160 with belt. Spoke to many others including V-spec and they all wanted over £200 with the possibility of more if there were problems with tight bolts, knackered tensioner etc.
Not sure about a head gasket but I'd definitely go there again - apparently they're ex Nissan main dealer mechanics who went out on their own.
Might see posing thru taff street when you've sorted it out.

Steve everyone keeps telling me this but it looks as if it has gone....

White smoke and very lumpy running, you can see the water droplets from the exhaust as it is leaking slightly at the flexi bit

It creates a little pool of water...

Any ideas on what creates the white smoke...

Turbo

Its not the turbo is it? Does the smoke come out constantly or when you boot it, or idling after a drive.

White exhaust 'smoke' is steam due to coolant entering cylinders through HG leak.

Have you done a hydrocarbon 'sniff test' on the coolant with an emissions tester? Worth doing before you pay for the head to come off...
