Exhaust Stuff!

New Midpipe! Brand new by BM Catalyst. Welding not perfect, but at least won't leak as much as the one that came off.
Have puchased new Lambda sensor gasket & studs / bolts to mount the old sensor on this pipe.
Image

I have also recieved new OEM Manifold to midpipe gaskets for the new midpipe.

Getting the old crusty midpipe off!

In order to remove the old midpipe, I saw no other way than to drop the rear subframe and loosen the rear roll bar.
So that's exactly what I did. I tried to loosen the rear roll bar first and of course, the stud sheared pretty much immediately.

Four bolts holding it on, and so I went at them with a "breaker bar". Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. I don't want to break any bolts here.

Image

Once all four bolts were out, I could see that one of the engine mounts was attatched to the rear subframe, and I was moving the whole engine!
I proceeded to use WD40 to loosen the bolts for the engine mount and undid them.
Before I lowered the subframe:
Image

After I removed the engine mount from the subframe, I was able to lower it much further than I could before.

After this, I was able to remove the other bolt holding the roll bar mount. Then I was able to pry it off, and pry the roll bar to allow the old mid-pipe through and out.
Image

Unfortunately this is it for this update, but the next should be soon. Installing new manifold studs and lambda studs will be next. Until next time! Goodies incoming!
Edit: Just a note to say, that my alignment was not too terrible after this. It was slightly off before and I don't believe this made it any worse. I would expect this process to ruin perfect alignment however.

Back Again!

Exhaust Stuff!

So I got some O2 Sensor studs from GT4 Play.
Went to go install them and I'm fairly sure its a shared fault between the new midpipe and me. Basically there was some weld spatter in one of the threaded holes, and I ended up shearing the new stud.
So welder out, get it back out and my plan was to just use a bolt I had lying around, then cut off the head. It worked, so I went to bolt down the sensor. For some reason the bolt ended up shredding the threads of the remaining
stud, and so I was forced to use bolts in place of both studs. I'm fairly certain it shouldn't be an issue.

Image

Both nuts were damaged too, so random nuts were used. Went on pretty tight and had a new gasket, so no problems. Hopefully.
Yes, that mess in the background is the brand new stud now in disarray, as well as the nuts I tried to weld to the stuck bit!
And yes! I wrapped the new midpipe. The old heat shielding was tack welded together in some places, and most bolts had degraded into rivets. I did not feel like dealing with this, and hey, I save a bit of weight! Hopefully this is good enough to keep heat in.

Image

It's far from perfect, but was still proud of it none the less! That is some nasty stuff though!
And so at this point, I had gotten the old midpipe out by dropping the subframe, and I could begin putting in the new one.
It all went way smoother than it had so far, with the new manifold stud going in like a dream!

The subframe hanger was a disaster, as I fought to get it on, only to find out I had put it on the wrong way around! I only realised this once I had tried to fit the muffler! Getting it off was infinitely harder than putting it on!
It was done nevertheless, and I simply had to see what it would sound like without a muffler! :D

Here is a short clip of that debauchery!
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/71boglEuad0

I perhaps should have reassembled more of the car before I did this, but you only live once I guess!
Once I had gotten that out of my system, I went on to fitting the muffler! Not the old one!
I had no interest in fitting the old catalytic converter or muffler, as someone had done a very shoddy repair. I'll stop myself. It was a perfectly functional repair, I just wanted a new exhaust!

Image

And so here it is. The chavbox 3000! A Japspeed Decat exhaust is exactly what the doctor ordered!

I couldn't fit it yet! There was a problem! My heatshielding above where it should go was ATROCIOUS! Brand new shiny part next to old rusty part? NOT HAPPENING!
So I made the old rusty part into an old sometimes shiny part! :D

Image

You can see how poor it's condition was, as I only had to undo all but one bolt for it to come free!
I will eventually replace it, likely with a custom aluminium one if I ever care enough, but for now this is what is going back on lol.

Sick of rolling around on the cold hard concrete and hitting my head on the underneath of the cat / other general contortionism I had to do to fit this, I just cracked on and here it is!

Image

Suits the car better than I expected, and I was curious to hear how it sounded on the road!
Here is a short clip on my instagram!

Long story short, my neighbors all love me to no end. 8)
I went for a good 2 hour drive, got lost, found myself on some very dark roads that were twisty in all the ways it could be. Not a lamppost in sight! I'd surely have been doomed if it wasn't for a mod I did just in the nick of time!

Headlight Stuff!
My old bulbs were actually dangerous. I have no idea if that is how all of them are, but my corolla has 20 something year old bulbs in and its way better than my MR2 was. That combined with the fact that the adjustment was way too high made it a simple neccesity to replace them with something better.

I really wanted to go with a different technology to halogen as it is flat out outdated and can't compete with modern lights blasting you in the face. Problem was, all the solutions were super expensive and quite honestly ruined the look with the headlights up. I hated all the bug-eyed LED units. I needed something I could put INSIDE the H4 housing. That's when I saw a little video of a guy testing out a chinese LED projector in a Clio!
Thats right, a whole LED projector with cutoff that is small enough to fit INSIDE A H4 HOUSING! How this hasn't made waves in the MR2 community I had no idea. So I ordered them. £40 a pair.
I was fairly certain I would go to fit them and they wouldn't work in the pop-up housing, and this would be why nobody talks about them. Nope. They went straight in with absolutely no issues.
Here is what the units look like!

Image

As you can see, there is a little LED converter that you have to tuck away somewhere. I just pushed mine between the housing and black steel "shield" behind it. Seems to stay in place well enough going up and down.
Whilst I was here, I lowered my headlights adjustment too. Just an arbitrary amount that I now know was too much, but I at least used the garage door to ensure they were even.

Image

Here is a side-by-side comparison with the original halogen. Of course, you can hardly see a difference other than colour, but you'll have to take my word that they project light at least three times as far, and the high beams even moreso. Supposedly, these are completely legal as they do in fact have a cutoff. I'd suggest they are possibly a "grey area" loophole, but plenty of people say that they pass MOT! :D
I would absolutely reccomend these to anyone looking for a serious legal upgrade to their halogens that doesn't ruin the original look. I envy those in the future that will read this and scoff at our pathetic 2025 light emitting technology. That or they envy our combustion vehicles. Theirs will probably run on solar panels or hampsters in wheels or something. [-X

Obligatory Glamour shot, as I'm feeling good about the car right now!

Image

Feeling on top of things right now, excited to meet the gang at japfest in mid April '25, but unfortunately I won't be showing as I was too late to the party. Of course they sell out for the first time ever once I buy a car! :(
Will still be driving it there, just as a guest. Have a lot of BS to chat with the MR2 guys when I'm there, and I wouldn't miss it for the world!

Will be at MR2 Nationals 2025 and hopefully Yakushi show 2025 too!

Really enjoyed reading through your build thread so far. Great to see a new face getting into the MR2 scene with such enthusiasm! It's also great that you're doing mods that YOU want to do to make your build personal. Keep up th good work dude 8) Also really great that you met up with pauln a while back. Haven't caught up with him for years and I think I still have a scuttle blanking plug that I promised to him way back when #-o

Appreciate the kind words Yoko! Getting pretty stagnant with the progress at the moment, as I don't want to start anything too serious before Japfest just in case! Have just gotten some 52mm gauges in, but I'm gonna hold off on installing most of them at the moment. Some good stuff coming after japfest though!

Good stuff! I also have some new guages on the horizon. My old Blitz duel SBC has finally started packing up so it's time for a new setup. Currently convinced that the prosport 52mm boost controller/combined boost guage will be the way to go to get rid of the 2 vacuum hoses in the cabin and combine 2 devices into one. Also looking at replacing my EGT guage with a more useful fuel pressue guage. At the moment I tend to accumulate parts rather than fit any though

I feel that one. Too easy to collect bits and bobs and do nothing with them. Bought 5 Gauges expecting to throw them all in, when I have no pods to put them in, and there's way more involved in installing them than I anticipated. Have to drill and weld two nuts to the exhaust for EGT & AFR, find an appropriate place for Water temp, fit my Oil pressure and temp sandwich between the engine and filter, etc. Being NA these are pretty much all I could ever need however.

Have got a few things ready to go pre-Japfest, foremost an oil change. Both brake and clutch fluid could do with replacement as both become gaseous with enough heat. Wont be using either too much on the motorway luckily!
(Famous last words) :?

I will be doing an induction setup if time permits as well, consisting of some aluminium tubing, silicone tubing and a fairly sizeable pipercross filter.
I may have gone overboard. We'll see. Noise is the goal, neighbors be damned.

Will you be attending Japfest? Has been an event on the horizon for too long and now it's catching up! Haven't got long, and I'll be on the road! :D

Back after Japfest! :D
Was fantastic to get the car out for a proper drive, even if it wasn't on show.

Image

I installed a custom intake setup before I went, as I needed that intake noise before taking on the drive!

Custom Intake Stuff!

I opted for a dry filter, as I cannot be bothered with the hassle of oiling and such that a K&N filter comes with. I was originally going to go with a RamAir filter, but I saw some pretty horrific accounts where the filters have let through a fair amount of material. Eventually I went with PiperCross as they have a long and reputable history in motorsport, but are still a great budget option! :D

I went to Stoney Racing for the aluminium and silicon hosing to put together my intake.

Image

I went for an oversize setup because I am an idiot and want my induction noise as loud as possible.
The parts used are very simple, just a 70mm 45 degree tube, a 70 to 90mm silicon hose and a 90mm tube. I also used Stoney racing's SW20 Intake tube for the vacuum line as seen here.

Image

You can already see the sheer amount of space that this mod has created. It would make the bay look nicer if the firewall wasn't so dirty! :?
It was also down here that I noticed a not so insignificant amount of surface rust on the fuel filler neck. I do not like it one bit, but it's far from springing a leak.
I will be cleaning this up in the future.

I didn't want to make a hot air intake, so I knew it would have to reach pretty far down near the vent. It does, but my silly oversize idea stopped it from going as far as I had planned. In order to make it fit, now I had to cut the 45 degree aluminium pipe shorter, which is visible in the last picture and the one below. What is not pictured is the hole I drilled in it to fit the IAT sensor. Overall I was pretty happy with the results I got from this mod, and it sounds insane.

Image

Sticker Stuff!

So it's a little late as they arrived this morning, but I got my Instagram stickers, which I was able to put above my Myogi Night Kids stickers I got while I was at Japfest.
Not to everyone's taste perhaps, but it is objectively better than the crispy half-gone cliffords alarm sticker that was there before. These were done on both sides.

Image

Next comes a clutch hydraulics rebuild. I believe my clutch fluid has water in it and I'd rather swap in new master / slave cylinders as well as a braided line before I do it. Going to be buying a decent compressor and using a vacuum bleeder to ensure I do a decent job. :D

Until then, Happy driving!
