Discussion and technical advice the SW20 MR2. 3S-GTE, 3S-GE, 3S-FE etc
Anything and everything to do with maintenance, modifications and electrical is in here for the Mk2.
So tried starting up my rev5 N/A after about 5 weeks and it would not start.
Pulled off the HT Lead nearest to the dizzy and it was drenched on oil. Just that one the rest were dry.
Is it a case of replacing a gasket ? Any links / videos? Is it a time consuming job? DIY ?
Thanks all.
Common issue, replacement gasket will sort it. Can't go wrong if you follow the workshop manual precisely
Genuine Toyota gaskets (its a two separate gaskets so get both, inner for plugs 2 and 3, and outer) can be found for around £20.
Its not too time consuming, easy DIY job with a standard tool set in an afternoon.
Might as well get yourself some nice stainless hardware to refit it, and use the opportunity for a cleanup / paint.
Thanks for the reply - you make it sound easy
I was just looking at the inlet that covers the top of the engine and that looks a pain to remove
Don't suppose there is a link to the manual on here?
It looks more intimidating than it is. The 3SGE inlet manifold is a two piece design, if you remove the ACIS cover you will see some bolts inside there that join the two pieces together. Remove those and the top half will lift off. Be sure to cover the 4 inlet runners before continuing, you don't want to be dropping anything down there!
Be careful with the cam cover to cylinder head bolts on removal and reinstallation. They do not need much torque at all, and the head is aluminium so be wary of cross threading etc. May be sensible to get a small torque wrench too, though many don't bother.
There are a couple gaskets here too, which you could replace at the same time. Some people just reuse them.
RM396E is the reference for the Gen3 3SGE. There are some very minor differences with the EU market Rev4/5 engines, but nothing substantial enough to make a difference for this job.
