Crunchy-grindy noise from rear wheel -eek!

After some heavy driving/cornering last night my car developed this noise this morning.
It sounds bit like when bearing goes, but had this changed few months ago.

Basically at low speed or starting to pull off from standstill there is a really bad grinding noise (on way to work) goes away quickly once moving.
Stopped in at walkers exhausts just to make sure wheel wasn't falling off!, and jacked up rear near side wheel.

There seems to be a lot of 'play' in the wheel and I thought maybe the ball joint has gone? (guys at garage no clue)

ANy ideas / suggestions?

Hi Jo, i dont know if its the same on rear wheel drives but sounds abit like the cv joint on the end of the drive shaft. My girlfriends 106xs does the same, happens when the joint dries up.

Jo, really not sure from what you told me, sorry.....

Play in wheel - right, need to determine is the hub moves with the wheel or not. If it does it's suspension bushes or balljoints or track rod ends. If it doesn't it's wheel bearing again.

Edit: Crunchy-grindy though, mmmmh Wheel bearing, something stuck between disc and shield, something stuck between hub and hub carrier, errm. You already know the driveshafts are a bit tired but this sounds like a new noise....oh dear

I kinda thought it might be cv joint too, but this went a bit more gradually on my old car (not a MK1). It was more of a knoking noise when cornering, but s'pse it would behave differently at the rear.

Dont think there is something stuck in it - but will check

The brakes and disks are in good nick too

How can i test btween cv joint and outer track rod end tho?

Can I state the obvious and say Check that the wheel is tight?

It may sound daft but my mate was convinced his Driveshaft was on its way out, or maybe his wheel bearing.

I went round, jacked the wheel up and 2 of the 4 wheel studs had sheared off.

Mine has started making a right funny noise when i start it up in the mornings - same crunching /grinding noise - like when you crunch the gearbox

dont know what it is but it stops when ive been going for a while

could it be the same thing?

Yep, thanks - this was the first thing i thought of hence:

They checked the torque settings on the nuts. But i'm tempted to take wheel off and reseat it again when i get home.

very possibly, but really seems to be wheel area - had windows down - and there is a fair bit of play at the wheel when jacked up.
I just don't know how to tell difference between hub movement and bearing movement yet.

Hope your car is ok miss mk1 - perhaps you should get yours checked too [-o<

yeah i really need to - its done 161k miles so i think it might be on the way out get scared at every noise i hear

The reason i said cv joint is because its only when you pull of, try pulling back the boot and having a look.

Doh! Thats what you get for quickly scanning a thread!

Outer track rod would normally show up as play when rocked between 9 and 3 o'clock positions. Really a two person job (one to rock, one to feel).

Wheel bearing done a few months ago - Can you get them to re-check the hub nut?

wheel bearing will make more of a chattering noise, ie you'll hear it most when driving alongside a concrete wall or past shops with the window down.

Sounds like the back plate catching the disc to me, especially if someone has been in there working on the bearing, also could be the driveshaft rubbing on the hub due to the reasembly process not being quite right. I think I would have it back to whoever fitted the bearing mate.

It's a truly horrendous noise and is evident even at very low speeds. There is also some end float in the wheel bearing, it's certainly more than the 2 thou specified in the rubbishy Haynes manual.

But the noise itself is almost definitely not coming from the wheel bearing. I'm 90% certain it's coming from the outboard side of the driveshaft. I think a bearing element has failed on the outer tripode joint.

Anyone else had this problem?

Hmmm...... My FWD started growling at low speed when one of the drive shafts slipped under thurst load during cornering. It pulled the splines out of the gearbox ever so slightly and it would growl from the 'box.

The fix on this was to push the drive shaft back in and spot weld the (previously interference) collars back to their original positions on either side of the support bearing on the longer drive shaft.

It's a long shot but may be worth mentioning - may be nothing like this for RWD though....

Can anyone tell me, can you buy the driveshaft outboard tulip assembly and the the tripode bearing elements separately, or do you have to buy a complete driveshaft assembly?

Blokey, thanks for comments. But it's not that. To put it into context when I first heard the horrendous noise I thought the bolts had nearly all sheared on one end of the driveshaft and it was running eccentrically bashing into something, it was that bad.

Fensport have some on their website, listed at £50 each. But at these prices they will surely be 2nd hand units unrefurbished.

Anna, Jo got it sorted and cheaply!

Jo took day off work and I went down in the afternoon to lend a hand.

The wheel bearing was loose-ish, stoopid garage who changed the wheel bearing forgot to fit the castellated lock washer! Real incompetence at a high level!

The driveshaft felt a little suspect, so we weren't 100% sure (bearing or driveshaft)

By a stroke of luck there's a Mk1 being broken less than 500yrds from Jo's house

We changed driveshaft and bingo! noise disappeared!
