Stagger 20mm vs 30mm

Hey guys,

I'm looking for some feedback from anyone that has gone from a 215f/235r to 215f/245r setup. How (if) has your handling changed? Theoretically, more understeer but I want to hear some real life feedback!

In my 16 years of MR2 ownership I was always on 20mm stagger and have learnt to live with a happy tail...and as for me that's where all the fun is I don't really want to lose too much of that.

Current setup
Front: 215/40/17
Rear: 235/40/17

Intended setup
Front: 215/40/17
Rear: 245/40/17

Reason for the change
- Plans ahead to increase power from 330hp to 400+ so I want more grip
- Keeping the stagger at 20mm seems to be difficult without either going to 35 profile front (harsh ride possibly) or getting into fixing rubbing issues

I went from 235 xxxx tyres to 245 good tyres so the comparison isn't really valid as the old rears was so bad.

I have Ultrac Sessantas front and rear now in those sizes, it's fine.

i'd go for a 45 profile on the front to keep the rolling radius similar f-r

Not a good idea on 17's. 215/45R17 may foul the spring perch depending on wheel width / offset, assuming stock suspension struts.

As said, depends on width / offset. I've seen several examples on forums and Facebook where people have had issues with 215/45 or 225/45R17 on stock suspension.

Coilovers?

Those sizes won't find under a stock spring perch. Neither will a 215/45R17 without some massaging.

BTW if you want more grip, fit a better quality tyre.

It will have more effect on grip than a 10mm-20mm width change, as when the tyre becomes wider, the contact patch doesn't actually increase.

I had 17" et45 8j
F 215/40/17
R245/40/17

Just changed to 17" et25 8j front 9j rear same tires as
Above and feel loads better

I just fitted 215 45 17 on mines and it hit the spring perch

215/40/17 are nearly touching not surprised they don't fit

Stick with a 40 front profile for rolling radius and 35 rear, or 40 rear if you want that extra side wall.. bear in mind there is no weight on the front, so a bigger rear radius could probably be justified more..

Ps I'm running 215/40/17 front and 245/35/17 rear ATM but going 245/40/17 rear this summer.

I've got 215x40 front on an 8inch ET35 and 255x40 9inch ET35 rear. When i figure out my replacement suspension the stock cups will be getting a gentle set of taps to give extra clearance for 235x40 or 225x45 or of course coilovers will clear any height. All 17's
