Wheel offset query

Hello chaps,

The time for new rear tyres is approaching and the selection available in 225/45/16 is fairly poor and expensive. I don't particularly rate the T1-R so do not want that, but I also don't ever track my car or do as much hooning as I'd like, so the extreme options don't seem particularly suitable either e.g. Ad08, R1R, R888 etc.

My question - are there any issues with changing to 225/50/16? Apart from the speedo reading 3% too slow that is.
Will there be any issues with rubbing? My wheels are Advan avs model 5s, but I have no idea of the offset.

If not I'd be able to buy a pair of rainsport 3s to match my fronts, definitely my mid range tyre of choice.

225/50R16 fits fine, depending on offset and ride height.

My car is only lowered by around 20mm, but I don't know what the wheel offsets are.
I know how to measure it, but that seems to require a wheel with no tyre on.

Does anyone know the offsets for these wheels, or can tell me how to find out please?

If you take a wheel off it will be stamped on the back. If they've been powdercoated or painted it may not be possible to see it if the coating has covered the stamp though.

Just out of interest have the actually tried the Toyo T1R in 225/45/16? Reason I ask is I'd never rated the T1R tyre, I tried it in on the OEM 15" tyre sizes and didn't think they were great, then I also tried them in 205/45/17 and 225/45/17 and thought they were awful, no grip and wobbly as hell.

However I picked up a part worn set for my staggered 16" wheels and they're great, the difference between them having 8mm tread and 6mm of tread is night and day. Once they're scrubbed in correctly they feel much stiffer and outright grip improves, they didn't feel far different from AD08 (not AD08R) on track. Can easily manage 100mph+ thru Craner Curves around Donington park.

There are plenty of better tyres out there but just thought I'd let you know before you completely right them off

I preferred the Kumho KU31 on my 16's to the T1R to be honest. Not sure if that's still available.

The Kumho are a good tyre, they lack the ultimate wet weather grip of better tyres by showing a little bit of wheelspin while turning. Bit slippy over some road grime too.

Done 12k on the rear set and they have worked well. Miles better than the crappy toyos that were on there before.

Yeah, the Kumho's are still a midrange tyre and as you'd expect there are limitations. They were around the same price as a T1R though so faced with a choice between the two I'd go for the KU31's every time.

Long term I want to put AD08R's on my 16's as I now have 17's as well.

I managed to fit a 235/50/16 T1R on an 8.5j +32 offset wheel. 225/50/16 should be just about ok if you arent too low otherwise you will need rolled arches.

I had a very close look on the inside of the rim and couldn't see any writing. Only this stamped on the outside of the rims.

Are 225/50/16 tyres generally ok, or is offset really a problem?

I tried KU31 on my Integra and wasn't impressed, but that was coming directly from A048R so it may have just been a sort of reverse placebo effect lol.

Not a bad all round tyre if the OP isn't doing any tracktime/fast road hooning though.

I would go straight for the ad08 in 225 45 16, its a cracking tyre on the road, in the wet and on the track.

You're right. I didn't actually realise AD08R were only about £18 more per corner than T1R. Hands down go for the AD08R if you're buying new!

That's just the VIA/JWL approval stamps and the max load for the wheel. I'd be surprised if the specs aren't on there at all, it's possible that they are completely obscured by dirt, or if they've been painted the layer of paint / powdercoat has covered it. When new they would have had a sticker on the barrel too, but that's probably long gone now.

Yeah, that might be a factor! KU31 is a decent enough mid range tyre. Better than a T1R IMO.

If your yearly mileage isn't too high it's a good choice for sure. I would have gone for them but I would be replacing them twice a year doing 25k miles!
