I found another mr2 with missing MOT mileage. Clocked back maybe?

Post by mr2_maverick »

I found a 50k on the clock mk2 but at the bottom the car is missing around 35k after 2006 and then disappears for 7 years.

My opinion/possibilities:

-car has been clocked back and stored away for 7 years till the next MOT in 2013 as it shows vehicle structure has rust
-car has been exported then clocked back/drive outside the uk
-private number plate for 7 years?

Can't be that bad for £1k?

I'd like your opinions please. Long distance for me to travel worth considering or not? Thanks.

I personally wouldn't bother if you've got doubts about it. A grand for a na mk2 with questionable history dosent seem like a great bargain worth traveling the country for, if it was nearby it's always worth a look. But I wouldn't want to be spending money on train fares to come home empty handed

The mileage on the clocks is pretty much irrelevant. It's a 20 year old car and mileage is a poor barometer of condition. Buy based on what's in front of you, not what number is on the clocks.

Opinion? Seller states milage as 90k in his ad. He may have a reason (like speedo dying or replacing for another reason) You could always ask him before you go.

Can't be that bad for £1K? Well that depends how much you value £1K. Betting on red or black can't be that bad with that amount, unless of course thats not a nonsense amount of money for you.

It could be a decent car, it could be a total piece of rubbish.

Sounds to me like the car has been off the road for whatever reason and on getting refurbished for road use again has had a 2nd hand speedo set finished. If the seller states about 90k this ties in with the original mileage and what's on there now plus any miles since MOT.

When I've been looking for cars it's when the seller mentions a Lowe mileage and then the MOT history shows a higher mileage at some stage with clocks changed, etc.

If you put a private plate on the MOT history stays with the car, etc.

As mentioned by a few others I'd buy in condition and see what it's failed and how often it's failed MOT's to see if it's been cared for or not.

Spot on.

Other thing is a ropey one will never cost you 1k. Because in no time you'll be forking out. ...

Biggest question mark over that ad is the claim, "2x new rear tyres bought this month"

Thats a big claim, where did they come from?

The ad says 90k now, I'm sure prior to that it said 51 or 55k. I also found out the car is a Cat C which might explain it being off the road for a 7 year restoration?

The owner didn't have the car when the history was altered so he didn't know what happened.

Cat C doesn't necessarily mean it's bent. Remember, the only difference between Cat C and Cat D is financial, it has nothing to do with the severity of the damage, only the total cost of fixing it plus other costs. Panel damage is enough to be a Cat C on a cheaper MR2.

In this case though there's no evidence of what the accident damage was or who fixed it. If it was more than just panel damage it should be obvious - check the floorpan, boot under the carpet, frunk, etc.

If the vehicles identity is correct (VIN matches the V5C), it drives right, and otherwise behaves as it should, then IMO it could be worth a low offer. If you buy it for £700 it turns out it's not right then you'll be able to make most of that back from breaking it. The rear lights and centre panel will sell for £100+ alone.

If you've the time and you can get it cheap you can certainly use it as a base for a build or some sort. I wouldn't pay 1k for it though.

Why though?

There are so many good ones around for that price that aren't smashed it's a buyers choice

Neither of us said we'd pay asking price.

Not seen many sub £1k Rev4's either.

just over a year ago I got a rev4 uk model T bar with 90k on the clock, full service history and in great condition. Paid £750 for it.

Since then it's had new wheels (upgrade to 16"), new headlights (stock are poor imo), full brake overhaul and a decent service. Has done 11k in that year without fault.

OK so I got lucky but it's still a 20 year old car that needs some love. If you are in doubt about a potential car then just don't bother. Trust your gut and look for another one.

Seems you are only looking at a 1k car due to the low price. Can you afford to shell out £500 over the next few months to keep it running well? Because it will prob need some major service items, plus brakes and then there is the question about history etc..

It's not 'the one', keep looking.

I think he's had the brakes changed but anyway I'll look out for something else. There are still lots left in the country

Another question, are there any things that a visual inspection and a test drive won't highlight? Something hard to find on these cars which will pop up later ? I have read through the buying an mr2 guide on the sale section so that's really my list of things to check off when buying an mr2
