The sound of running/trickling water??

Post by oxide_mr2 »

Random post maybe, but i have this very irritating sound of trickling or running water which seems to be coming from the passenger footwell area.
Anyone experienced this before?

At first i just assumed it was fuel or the washer bottle, but that would be more of a sloshing noise if i could hear it at all.

My only plausable assumption at the moment is air trapped in the coolant pipes.

Thoughts before i loose my sanity would be grately appreciated.

My first thought would be coolant in the heater matrix. Top up and bleed the coolant system. Make sure the overflow bottle in the corner of the engine bay is also at the correct level.

Yep. If you can hear water there is air. Bleed, and check for leaks. Air doesn't just 'get in there'.

yay, could just the pipes from hell. there are 2 heater pipes above the fuel tank that rip away from the mounting over the years and they leak.

A good days work to sort out, including removing the fuel tank. Can test for them by taking the plastic undtrays off, should be able to see the water leaking down from above then. They leak at the rear, so have to take all the plstics off as they overlap.

thanks all.

one of the previous owners kindly tied a cabletie to the coolant level dipstick so i should be able to keep an eye on the water level.

any tips on bleeing these appreciated.

normally i would remove the rad cap/expansion bottle (which ever is highest)
let the engine warm up and then hold the throttle (at the throttle body) open to a few thousand RPM so the pump pushes around any air and out it comes.

Pretty much what you've described, make sure you open both bleed valves one on the heater matrix in the middle and the other on the radiator. Stick the little hoses that should be in the trunk on them and loop them over the locking O on the bonnet. Once opened the coolant will run up then and you can see the air coming out.

Another thing I like to do is jack the back of the car up slightly.

Thanks for the help,
Could you send a picture of where to find these bleed valves?
