External mic location

Post by auzzam »

Hi all,

Has anyone ever mounted an external mic on the car? I've got an upcoming track day and want to capture the true sound of the car rather than using the tinny sound from the inbuilt camera mics.

I think it'd be pretty tough as wind noise would be hard to shield from, that or too close to the exhaust and it'll be terrible.

I've seen a lot of people use the gopro stuck to the rear window and sound & video captured sounds great.

used to have real sound issues when i was on the motorbikes. solution was to stick a exhaust mike right at the back under a rear fairing near the exhaust. a comparible solution would be to tape one to the inside of the rear bumper maybe?

Depends on what sound you want to capture.

For exhaust noise, use the number plate recess - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Md1ZG0AbnE

For mainly induction noise, the rear window is relatively shielded - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4zsHzUwU04

Also, buy one of these - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-Rode-MINI ... 1452021689

Furry ones are best. Foam ones generally aren't as good IMO.

Thanks guys!

Will try these locations out today. I'm just trying to capture the sound of the down shifts with the exhaust pops.

When I tried mount it near the exhaust over the weekend if was way too distorted - even on idle lol.

I'm using a zoom sound recorder with a line out into the go pro. I guess long term when I get round to making a video tribute to my mr2 I'd want to capture the actual sound of acceleration with the spool and bov.

Will post my results, thanks for the help
